Cajamarca, my hotel is right next to the cathedral.
Cajamarca is a colonial town with access to several archaeological sites. it is also the site of one of the quickest military victories. It was here in 1532 that conquistador Francisco Pizarro and his 160 Spaniards were able to kill more than 6000 Incas and capture Atahualpa, the King of the Inca empire. He later paid a ransom of a room full of gold and two of silver, but he was killed anyways.
I can't be the first person noting that this was naïve. - But from the perspective of the Spaniards this was actually easy money gained by a technology advantage. They financed the religious wars in Europe with it. - Also the king did a disservice to his people because it's spored on the greed for more gold. Couldn't he just have died?
