Day 5: After a lovely pancake brekky (thanks Harry), we parked the van at our Underground B& B, and headed off to see Tom's Working Opal Mine.
Firstly, what a relief from the flies! Man I forgot about bush flies. In your eyes, up your nose, in your ears...they are so persistent!
Anyhow, what a great experience to see how a real opal mine works. The boys were fascinated, hoping of course to strike the mother load whilst there. Did you know that opal is worth $30,000/Troy ounce? Far more precious than gold.
After lunch we spent the afternoon exploring Faye's Underground House (which was fascinating), the underground museum and the opal cave. Funnily enough, everywhere you visit...they sell opal!
That evening we locked the caravan, and spent the night underground. It was an experience. It is a little weird not having windows, but the temperature was lovely. It was also a good opportunity for all the boys to have a good soak and for me to wash my hair (easier than having to put zillions of 20c pieces in a machine every 3 minutes!).
Well, I reckon Coober Pedy rocks! (excuse the pun). Everyone should come and experience this town...IT IS AMAZING! I cannot recommend it enough.
