27th Feb - Today we got a flight to Tasmania - flew with Tiger Airways which was a tiny airline with a terminal that was just one building on its own - not worthy of the main airport! cheap though! arrived in Hobart mid afternoon and found our hostel. Then had a wander round the town and shops and down to the harbour where we found a nice fish and chip dinner!
28th - We picked up our hire car early in the morning - a little yellow hyundai getz which we named Bruce! really cool! and easy to drive which was good as i thought i might have forgotten what to do! glad the drive on the same side as us here though! We drove down via small place called Richmond (lots of old things!) to Port Arthur (the site of a famous old convict prison)which we spent the afternoon looking round. Was quite interesting but we got a bit wet - the weather in Tasmania was a lot colder than Melbourne - out with the jumpers! Drove back to Hobart for the evening and went out to dinner at an Italian (a bit funny!) before back to the hostel to freeze - we had the heater on in our room!
29th - Left Hobart for Bicheno today - drove up the East Coast stopping at a few small places on the way. It was quite a long drive but was nice scenery along the way - apart from all the roadkill! (nice!) We got to Bicheno mid afternoon and checked into our hostel which was really nice - small and cosy! Then we went back out to Freycinct National Park where we did a walk to a lookout to see Wineglass Bay (a pretty beach!). A bit uphill but much easie than hiking up a glacier! On the way out we saw a wallaby with a joey in the carpark! Spent the evening back in rainy Bicheno - relaxed at the hostel hiding away from the cold with a cup of tea!
1st March - Today we moved on from Bicheno - drove up the coast a bit further and then over to Launceston and George Town where we stayed with Lynda and Jamie for a night. It was a very long day driving but we saw some pretty places and beaches etc on the way - stopped at St.Helens and Binalong bay (squeaky sand that felt like flour!) as well as a couple of small villages. Arrive in George town late afternoon and were very grateful to get to stay in a house rather than a hostel for a night! Also got to meet Kaiser - their 2 yr old son - who was adorable! he seemed to like us and showed us all his toys so we could play with him! Had a takeaway pizza dinner before getting a good nights sleep not in a bunk bed for once!
2nd March - left Lynda and Jamies about half 9 and drove to Cradle Mountain which was quite a long way! Had a chance to practise my steering as we went on some very windy roads up steep hills and very high up! Got there around lunchtime and did a walk around 'Dove Lake' which you get a good view of Cradle Mountain from all the way round. Was a nice easy walk and very pretty. Late afternoon we drove back to Launceston where we were staying for the night - we were sad as we had to give Bruce back but when we got to the office we found it was shut! so we kept bruce a bit longer - would drop him at the airport in the morning instead! didnt do much in the evening -had dinner at the hostel and watched some tv - there was a powercut upstairs which made getting ready and into bed a bit more interesting!
