Hello everyone, sorry to keep you in suspense for so long!
The last few days have been good. Less activities this week and more relaxing!
We left San Christobal de las Casas and took the bus to Palenque the jungle ruins. On the way we visited two amazing water falls - Agua Azul (although as its rainy season its more like Agua Cafe) and Misol-Ha. Both were really nice and in the middle of jungle terrain which was cool.
Then onto Palenque- well, what can I say? Its amazing, the best ruins by far and set in the heart of the jungle with howler monkeys in the trees making a racket while you walk round! Even though it is visited by millions of people you still feel as if you're the only one discovering the ruins. You can walk up and down all of them and explore inside - you feel like a little kid visiting each temple and imagining what life must've been like in the Mayan days. However, being in the jungle meant MOZZIES. See pics to follow for Fiona's bite-tastic legs (yes parents I was using mozzie repellent!)
Following Palenque we landed in the small pirate town of Campeche- famous for being the landing spot of the Spanish conquistadors when they first came to Mexico. The city is walled and a lot of money has been spent doing up the sea front. It is very picturesque and was lovely and hot but we found there wasn't that much to do here. We explored the walls and museums then just relaxed at the hostal.
From Campeche we then got a bus two hours north to Merida - a cosmopolitan city in the heart of the Yucatan region. Merida is good fun, lots of bars, cafes , museums and things to do. Tomorrow we are heading to Uxmal ruins then Thursday we are going to visit the Cenotes (underground swimming pools). Friday we are heading to plastico Cancun and I can't wait! We will be crashing on the Isla Mujeres though as it's a lot more backpacker friendly (as are the prices!).
More photos will be uploaded soon promise - I can't wait for you to see the ones of Palenque.
No swine flu in the Yucatan and we are being very careful - handwashing more etc. We keep checking the foreign office websites etc. Don't worry we are all good.
Hope everything is ok at home.
Lots of Love Fi & Tom
xXx
