Find Vicki and Liz
It's been a while since I wrote and I have done so much since so, here's a summary of my highlights! Take a look at my photos to see where I've been and the fun I've had in Australia! Eira and I left Darwin on The Ghan train which takes almost 24 hours to reach Alice Springs. Yes, it is a long way but crikey the train is slow and it seemed to stop so many times!! It was fortunate that I was armed with my trusty Boots Sleeping Tablets!! Upon arriving in Alice Springs we walked up Anzac Hill to view Alice from on high and realised that it really is in the middle of nowhere!! A small town literllay in the middle of a desert, used mainly as an access to Uluru (formerly Ayers Rock). Whilst wandreing around Alice we saw a number of excellent art galleries showing some pretty amazing Aboriginal art. It was all so wonderful that both Eira and I bought our own pieces of art from a unique gallery owned by the Aboriginal artists themselves - I'm looking forward to seeing mine again when I eventually get home! The following day we joined our 3 day and 2 night Adventure Tours trip to Kata Juta (The Olgas), Uluru and Kings Canyon. We spent two evenings around a camp fire and slept under the astounding night sky - excellent! Who needs a tent when you've got a swag and a nice warm sleeping bag! One evening we even had a go at playing the Digeridoo - it's not easy!! Uluru was amazing - we watched the sunset and witnessed how much the rock changes colour as the sun goes down! The following morning we got up v early and walked the base of Uluru as the sun came up. Uluru is so different up close - it looks so smooth from a distance but up close it's full of patterns and markings which seem to form shapes and faces. Uluru was a real highlight for me and anyone coming to Oz really should try to visit Uluru and learn about this important Aboriginal site. After our Adventure Tours trip we flew from Alice to Sydney and managed to fit so much into Eira's last 5 days in Oz. We spent 3 hours in Darling Harbour's Aquarium totally mesmerised by the multitude of sharks, rays and fishies. We got dolled up and went to the Opera (get me!) to see Sean's dad play the lead in Turindot - so moving, I think I might become an opera buff as I really did love it so much! We climbed Sydney Harbour Bridge and saw the city from a totally different perspective at dusk. We walked the famous coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee on a hot winter's days and gasped at the beautiful coastline. Sydney is brilliant and I'm looking forward to exploring more when I come back - so much to do and hopefully the sun might shine when I return!! Eira left for NZ and Ben arrived for 3 weeks to explore the East Coast so I wasn't along for long. We flew up to the Whitsunday Coast and joined our 3 day sailing adventure on the Ragamuffin II. Day 1 was sunny and we visited Whitsunday Island which was beautiful, white sandy beaches and bluey green seas. Day 2 and 3 were wet and as you can see from my photos we braved the wet in bright yellow sowesters...attractive!! We did manage to snorkel on the Barrier Reef even though it was pretty cold - amazing coral and marine life, must go back! From The Whitsunday Coast we went to Fraser Island which was brilliant! We had our 4WD and explored the world's biggest sand island setting up camp wherever we fancied! Who needs hotels when you have a tent, a gas camping stove and a 4WD? Not us!! We saw so much wildlife there......Tiger Sharks, Rays, Turtles, Dingos and Humpback Whales! Sad as we were to leave Fraser our East Coast adventure had to continue so we watched humpback whales in Hervey Bay before heading down to Noosa and then to Byron Bay which is where I am now. The sun's not out but there are some cool shops and Ben is happy splashing around in the surf so it's all good! We're back in Sydney tomorrow and my travels have some to an end, job hunting as of next week...wish me luck! Liz xxxx
