Been to a few places since my last update and from the Gilis to Senggigi in Lombok then had the 3 most wonderful days on the east coast of Bali in a small fishing village called Amed with very few tourists around, its a world away from the resorts in the Gili's.
When I arrived it immediately reminded of the village from one of my favourite films Local Hero except this was Bali not Scotland! I stayed in a place with a balcony overlooking the sea, I think that's the first time ever I have woken up to sounds of the sea from my bedroom and it was is in the most unexpected and glorious of locations, there is something about the sea that fascinates me. On the day I arrived in Amed there was a heavy thunderstorm for about 2 hours but it was so magical, I just sat on the balcony watching the rain with a huge grin on my face.
I had been meaning to do a dive and this seemed the ideal opportunity as the was a wreck of an American ship which had been torpedoed in WW2 by the Japanese was close by. I had the fortune to dive with a very pretty French lady dive master and she held my hand as we went down! I had the confidence to dive and move around on my own and discover the wreck and the fish and corals around me, I went 17 metres deep and was under water for 40 minutes.
Again such a wonderful experience but once more it's other moments of simplicity which can give as much satisfaction, like the day I woke up in Lombok to the smell of bacon! I seriously thought I was dreaming and had to breathe the smell in through my nose for a while before I realised it was real. I hadn't had a bacon buttie since I'd been on the road and I also didn't realise the place I was in served it for breakfast.
After Amed I went to Padangbai for 3 nights and just relaxed there and found a great secluded beach. Whilst here I took the opportunity to go on a fishing trip, unfortunately didn't catch anything but it was a great experience sailing the Bali sea. Once again the place where I was had great home cooked grub and what I call 'real' food like home made brown bread and all kinds of fresh fish. I don't know about you but when I have fish is I like plain and simple and never understood why it needs to covered and cooked in too many sauces and spices it completely ruins the taste, just a little bit of lemon juice and black pepper, fish, especially fresh from the sea has a beautiful delicate taste and needs very little flavouring, if you want to add sauces and spice it up you would be just as well using stuff from a tin!
Arrived in Sanur southern Bali today where I will be for Christmas, very nice resort town and there is an Irish Pub across the road, so I got my dinner sorted! Let's hope they have cabbage!
