Hoi An
Fri 6.12.29 - Sun 8.12.19
This morning we left Hue by minibus for Hoi An. The route took us via the scenic Hai van Pass (Ocean Cloud Pass) recently made famous by Top Gear. Just outside Da Nang we visited the hidden temples and caves of Marble Mountain.
Hoi An is halfway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Min City. We arrived at lunchtime so dumped our bags and headed out for an orientation walk through town and then lunch by the river. It’s known as the City Of Lanterns, lots of lanterns in the streets, lantern shops and boats festooned with lanterns. The market here is just as busy as the one in Hue. Had some banana roti which as delicious. Fee got measured for a linen shirt with the tailor turning up for the first and second fitting. Our guide recommended dinner at Morning Glory..... street food in a restaurant, it was worth it, it’s part of a small chain and offered 10% off on the next meal.......
The following day we visited “My Son” a complex of Hindu temples, built between 4th-14th century. The site was bombed by the US during the Vietnam War consequently causing much damage. There had been some restoration work undertaken and a lot more to be carried out. Yummy Lebanese meze dinner at Zeytun. Walked around the old quarter and Cam Nam an island just over the river. Night market and smoking ice cream, the pictures didn’t really capture the effect.
Sunday we caught up with nearly everyone at breakfast. Wandered around town soaking up the atmosphere. Much quieter as the roads closed to traffic, we also bought the ticket to enter up to 5 of the local historical places. There are 10 places on the list. The first three were closed which was a shame, but we managed to use all 5 entry tickets. Bumped into most of the tour group during the day - it’s a small town! Including coffee with Ann and Joe and when we visited the Quan Cong Temple - the real treat was the birds of prey just sitting on perches.
