South East Asia Adventure
Off to Puerto Natales for a brief overnight stop before heading off to El Calafate. El Calafate is close to the national park where the Perito Moreno Glacier is, this is a really big glacier but not the biggest. The face of it is 5km long and drops straight in to the lake. It rained and rained and rained and we hoped that would increase the chances of seeing some large iceburgs falling from the face of it but we didn't see any. Got very wet and managed to have my first Hotdog. (almost a national dish in Chilie)
El Chalten is like a set from an old cowboy film! I've never been to place where all the streets are dirt roads, the wind really really blows and you expect tumble weed to roll round every corner. We arrived to really bad weather so hoping that it will clear tomorrow so we can do the Fitzroy walk. Meanwhile lots of hot chocolate, hearty food, card schools and the like.
After I gave up on the first walk to the towers of pain I thought I would never do another walk but I was told that the Fitzroy walk was all downhill as we could get a taxi up the hill. Well we still had to walk up about 500 meters and then it was through mud, small rivers and then downhill most of the way. It was hard work ot took about 5 hours in total. Once the snow had stopped and the clouds cleared it was stunning.
Perito Moreno town is nowhere near the glacier. There's nothing here really and the supermarket shelves are pretty empty. We stayed in the best hotel PM had to offer, probably the worst so far. But the hot chocolate, dinner and breakfast was pretty good so not all bad.
The Journey started as desert but nearer the end of a long day (12 hrs) we arrived in a green and pleasant place. It was very like a Swiss ski resort including the St Bernards hanging around the place. We went up the gondala to Cerro Otto which gaves us beautiful views over the lake and national park.
We had Chocolate Fondue - eat your hearts out girls!! Actually more like thick Duche De Leche but we had fun, dipping fruit and biscuits in it. Off to Pucon tomorrow, over the border again into Chile
