Hey everyone! I have been so busy with Trek America so far and I hope I can fill you in with everything without missing out on too much :) We started our trek from LA on the 25th May and had a quick tour of Hollywood Boulevard, which I had already seen in great detail from being at the hostel. Then we were on the road and heading to Las Vegas. We stayed at the Tuscany hotel which was amazing... it was like an apartment and it felt so good to sleep in a bed not a bunk bed or a tent for the first time in months! The night was the best as we took a limo around the Strip for an hour and we were all having a very drunken time - we were in Vegas. It is part of the Vegas culture lol. We saw the Bellagio water show which was phenomenal. It's like a fountain set to music! I recorded some of it and will try and upload it on here at some point. We also saw the Fremont light show, which was a series of video footage of Queen reflecting above us on the roof. It was really awesome and it celebrated one of the best bands in music history. My final day in Vegas was spent walking around the Strip and wandering into some of the hotels and of course the M and M shop :P
We set off for Zion National Park the following day and it was so nice to be there knowing that I did not have to work and I could be a tourist. We did Angel's Landing... however I made it to Scout's Lookout which was the bit before you had to hold onto chains on the edge of the rocks. I was 0.5 miles away from the top.. so close yet so far. I freaked out because it is quite overwhelming to realise there is no longer a trail to follow but some stepp rocks and a chain and a sheer drop lol. The view was still amazing and it was a hard hike, but rewarding all the same.
After a quick visit to Zion we went for a breezy visit (in two senses) to Lake Powell and then Horseshoe Bend. Really cool places to visit and greta photo opportunities! We then headed to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. INCREDIBLE. I wish I could describe how amazing the Grand Canyon is but I am afraid you will have to get your butt's here and see for yourself! We hiked the Kaibab Trail which was a 3 mile round trip but what made it hard was the very steep climb back up. Wait for the photos! It was so much fun though :D We walked some of the Rim Trail and visited the Visitors Centre also. I will make a more concise account of my travels when I get the time as I have so much to write but not enough internet! Just you wait!
After the Grand Canyon we headed to the brilliant Monument Valley and spent the evening with the Navajo's. We had a 2 and hald hour guided tour of the valley and listened to the echoes of the canyon and the rich history of the tribe. We joined them for entertainment - dancing around the campfire and listening to their songs. It was a truly amazing experience to be a a part of their culture. We saw a hogan (where they live traditionally) and enjoyed watching 99 year old Susie weave wonders into the hair of our friend.
I am currently in Telluride, Colorado and it is amazing weather for this time of year. Last week it was snowing and this week it is warm sunshine. We arrived into the town on a cable car which was a great experience and have seen the mountains that surround our picturesque campsite. Tomorrow we are off to the Rocky Mountain National Park nice and early!
Watch this space and I will update you in more depth when I can and publish the never ending amount of pictures I have!
See you on the 2nd July - when I am back home :) x x x x
