Shenzhen is a city of 10 million and is 2.5 hours by bus or 2
hours by ferry from here. That does not include going through immigration as despite Macau being part of China - there is still immigration from here to mainland china. We did a bit of shopping in Shenzhen on the Saturday afternoon and bought some gameboy games and dvds and a few items of clothes for the kids.
We were the only western people there and the shops were absolutely jam packed - think Boxing Day sales in Sydney and double it and you would have about the number of people. It was easy enough to keep track of Stephen as he is about the same height as everyone else only blonde. We made sure that Claire was holding an adult's hand all the time and often that was Ruby's and she reported that everyone they passed was talking about Claire.
The following day we went to a fabulous theme park called Windows of the World. Here the kids had their photos taken often and Matthew was in as much demand as Claire (he was quite pleased about that as she usually gets all the attention).
The park was huge and even after 6 hours we probably only saw about 60% of it. All the major buildings/natural sites of the world were covered - it was like Cockington Green in Canberra only the scale was much bigger and it was much better. The "model" of the Eiffel Tower was 1/3 size, so it was 105metres tall. We caught a lift to the top and had a great view over the park - spotting Tower Bridge, Westminster, Taj Mahal, Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, Pyramids of Egypt, White House and Capitol building, Manhattan Island with all of its buildings (including the twin towers) all the major temples of Asia etc. It was absolutely terrific. There were a few rides and we (except Stephen and Cath) tried a water ride through the Grand Canyon - they issued you with rain ponchos ready for the big splash down at the end - Doug, Ruby and Rich all managed to get drenched! There were also water cannons which members of the public could aim at oncoming riders for 1 yuan per cannon and Rich was inundated
by a group of chinese - amazing that you do it to total strangers, but there you are! Luckily it was a sunny day.
