Having a car has made a real difference in just the 24 hours we have had it. Whilst Macau is not too big and the taxis are cheap, it is often not possible to get a taxi when you want one. The kids had got used to waiting at school as Cath was late getting a taxi. Supermarkets home deliver, but not anything cold, frozen or fresh - which just about summarises 80% of your shopping sometimes.
Shopping is an education as everything is quite different, though the fruit and veg are terrific and the meat mostly comes from Australia and NZ and we are paying far less for it here than you are at home. Wines and spirits too are very inexpensive....bacardi, kahlua, gin etc are all 75MOP for a 700ml bottle and with 6MOP to the AUD - you can see it is pretty cheap. Wine of course depends on the label, just like at home, though Macau is the cheapest place in Asia for wine, due to the influence of the portugese. Wine from all over the world is widely available at bargain prices - a reasonable bottle of Wolf Blass for example was also 75MOP and some portugese and chilean wine is below 50MOP, so we will enjoy checking it out. There is even a wine museum here in Macau,
though we have yet to visit it.
In fact we have not visited any attractions of the cultural kind, though we did go to fishermans wharf here which has a few rides and have had dinner there a few times - both of which were good experiences. The time for exploring and looking around will start very shortly as the house is getting pretty organised and the kids are settled at school.
We in fact start this weekend as we are having a visit from Doug and Ruby and are going with them into Shenzhen in China by ferry from Macau. As Ruby speaks mandarin, it will be good to have her help and the kids can show off their fledgling work to her. We missed Doug and Ruby in Sydney on our fleeting visit home as they were away so we havent seem them for 8 months or so and I am sure it will be nice for Rich to see his brother and catch up. Luckily we have the sofa bed and sheets!
