Week two of teaching down and I'm still absolutely loving it! I'm slowly getting used to the early starts and the crazy amount of energy kids have but I'm really enjoying getting to know both the kids at my primary school and all the students in my adult classes.
School starts really early here, the primary school I'm at begins at 7.00 each morning and school finishes at 1.30. Most schools start at around this time and the day is split into two with half of the school going to school in the morning and the other half going in the afternoon. This happens because there is a serious shortage of primary school teachers in Costa Rica and rather than having unbearably large class sizes (classes here are already at least 30 children) the decision was made to have shortened school days and split it into two. This seems to work well for the children but the teachers find it completely exhausting! Luckily the school I am working at doesn't have this issue as there are only about 30-35 children per grade so the children are just split by grade. This is fantastic as the kids at the school I'm at have the opportunity to do P.E., music, art and I.T. which is virtually unheard of at schools here. It's a really cute little school and the staff are all lovely and so proud of everything they have managed to achieve and provide for the kids.
Evening classes are fantastic as well, our students are all really lovely and we've begun to make friends with a lot of them and socialise with them after class. A couple are training to become English teachers which is great because they're always really keen to do language swapping so I can practice Spanish and they can practice English, hopefully this week I'll have some time to actually spend a few hours practicing with one of them!
This weekend has been very relaxed, we went to the pub to watch Costa Rica vs El Salvador at soccer on Friday night, it was the longest soccer game I've ever seen! The lights at the stadium went out after 25 minutes so the first half ended up taking over an hour and after all that it ended up being 2 - 2, not a particularly successful night!
Back to school for the week tomorrow morning, I should probably be doing some planning for my evening classes as well! Pura Vida everyone!
