Vihdoin perillä Reginassa! Parin päivän ajan on jo tänne kerennyt asettua taloksi ja asiat alkavat pikkuhiljaa luistaa jo jonkinnäköisesti. Ensiksi kuitenkin yhteenveto Winnipegin tapahtumista.
Toinen päivä meni The Forksin alueeseen sekä St. Bonifaceen (ranskalainen kaupunginosa) tutustuessa.
No, kävi ilmi, ettäkartan kampus olikin vanha kampus ja asuntoni sijaitsee uudella kampuksella.
Finally at Regina! I've had a couple of days time to settle now and thing are starting to go to the right direction. But first a summary about Winnipeg.
After a rest day the first day went in Manitoba museum. There were interesting exhibitions about both Worlds and Manitobas history. Planetarium and science exhibition attached to the museum were bit disappointing though. The shows in planetarium were pretty boring, and the science part looked like it was mainly aimed for children under 12. At the evening I went to eat with some of the people from the hostel. The buffet-style dinner in east Indian restaurant was awesome
At the second day I discovered the Forks area and St. Boniface (French quarters). The Forks was a pretty area with lots of beautiful parks, but St. Boniface left little to tell to the following generations.
In my last day in Winnipeg I went to see the Legislative Building. It was pretty interesting with all the symbolism hidden in the place while it was constructed. From there I come back to hostel via library. At the evening me and a couple of my new friends from hostel went to see the U23D movie to IMAX-theatre.
The bus drive from Winnipeg to Regina lasted 9 hours. After arriving in Regina I have travelled 2700km by bus and it has taken 38 hours of time. The first night in Regina had not the best start. The stuff I sent here from Toronto were here waiting right where they were supposed to be, but I couldn't find the friends, who were supposed to pick me up, anywhere. After waiting for 15 minutes (later I found out that they were 30 minutes late) I decided to carry all my stuff and walk to the university using the map found from Lonely Planet. The map indicaded that the campus shouldn't be that far away. Well, I found out that the campus shown in the Lonely Planet was actually the old campus and my apartment is located on the new campus and the new campus was few kilometres away from there, outside the map I had. I asked some pieces of advice from some people I found from the old campus and started orienteering towards the new campus according to their instructions. After little more than 20 minutes of wandering around with all my staff (~40 kg) the two people who had told me the route to university came to pick me up with their car. Then I get to university and had no problems in getting my apartment there, but when I tried to find the key to the storage locker where the previous exchange students from Jyväskylä had left some stuff (like linen and blankets) it turned out that I cannot get the key there from the same kiosk I got the key to my apartment but I have to get that from the residence office, which had closed many hours ago. So my first night I dressed on all my winter clothes (room temperature here is much colder that in Finland) and sleeped in plain mattress.
First thing I did in the morning was to get the key to the storage and find out what I could find there. From there I found pillows, blankets, linen, plates, utensils and some other useful stuff. Later that day I went to the orientation and grocery shopping. IN the evening the exchange students had some kind of a meeting at the Lazy Owl (campuses bar) which I attended to.
Getting used to the places continued next day, when the international office arranged a trip to downtown. It was a slight disappointment though, because we got to see only one mall and city library. However, I got to buy some kitchen equipment from the mall. Exchange students had something going on that evening too, but because I was tired I came back to apartment already on 11 pm.
Most of today I've spent in Wal-Mart trying to find things that I still need in my apartment. I went there with two Mexican girls. The weather was a bit cold and rainy, but the trip went fine otherwise. As I'm writing this I'm washing my laundry. The washing programs found in the washing machines are a bit strange though. They are named White, Color, Bright Color and so on and no-one of them tells what the wash includes. Well, I chose the Color-program and if everything seems fine afterward I think that I just continue to use that.
