Today we got a late start... We slept in a bit, had breakfast, and headed out towards town. We ran in to art and Lillie who said there isn't a town per se, so we hired a taxi . Phil is part German, part Greek and spoke English well. He also had a dry sense of humor so we got on well. He drove us to the beaches of Ano mera which are deserted at this time of year - he said give it 3 weeks and it will be packed .. Mykonos is a party island only. They don't really grow anything; their main industry is tourism, mostly of the rich or famous. Nothing happens but partying; the drunk drive around in the biggest cars they can rent - there are usually 40 accidents a day (70 in August) and mostly alcohol related. There are only 8 police in the island, usually trainees from Athens, but owners don't want to rent to them - they get much more money from the tourists! And if there's an accident, it will take the paramedics 4 months to get there (Phil's words). We were told that Mykonians must paint their houses 4x/yr and must be white and blue - other colors are taxed highly ... That's why everything looks so uniform, and clean. We went to to beaches drove around a bit not much to see since we weren't partying, so we went back to the ship.
