The Turkish carpet school is government sponsored - they place 5000 apprentices every year .. Unfortunately I did not take any pictures of the carpets, but there were some beauties available for purchase. We passed the water park where you can play golf and get a massage and swim with the dolphins. Joey has a picture (he is in the front seat so was able to get the shot). There's a lot of rain here, but luckily not today. In the summer it gets up to 60°C. That's 140 degrees Fahrenheit!!! Unlike yesterday, where we saw not one police car, we've already seen two here, because today the president of Turkey is coming to the city. Lillie commented that she's surprised at how modern everything is here. Joey asked the price of gasoline here, and it turns out to be $15 a gallon. The highways are well maintained. I wonder if the price is mostly taxes, to keep the roads up. We are on the way to the Virgin Mary's house. And of course, we are stuck in a traffic jam.our driver Ramazan doesn't like the slow line of cars so despite the fact that we are in a two lane road, he drove on the left side to pass everyone! The police have closed the road. But Ramazan got to the front of the line by driving on the wrong side! The road up to Mary's house is long and winding; and 425 meters up. We walked to the Virgin Mary's house, and we are not allowed to take pictures inside. But we took pictures outside, and then Art and Lillie lit candles. They prayed for their family and friends. Ephesus used to be a harbor city, but now the ocean is pulled back and it is 15 km away. The Turks have a sense of humor - near the ruins of the Ancient city of Ephesus they have many trinket shops... Since we asked about leather, Ramajan took us to a leather factory where we succumbed to the sales pitch of the incredibly soft, double sided and waterproof leather jackets... And Lillie also bought a purse. Since art wanted to be back to the ship by 3:30. (And we didn't make that deadline) Ramajan drove like a race car driver! And because the Turkish president was going to be driving by, we had to take back roads to avoid the motorcade. Almost 2 brushes with greatness - the Turkish president, and the Pope!
