Hello from (not very sunny) Santorini
Had a good ferry journey across to Santorini, and were surprised and delighted to be met at the port by Leftakis, the owner of the apartments we were staying at for a free transfer (result !) although we had to share the minibus with a giddy group of teenage volleyball players from a neighbouring island who were very funny and were practicing their English with us ! We have a nice little apartment in the capital, Fira, and have complimented Leftakis on his home made wine on arrival, we are now delighted to find a free jug of wine in the fridge on a daily basis - naturally it would be seen as incredibly rude not to empty the jug (also on a daily basis !)
I have wanted to come to Santorini for a long time and it is just as unspoilt and pretty as I imagined although it would look a lot better against abright blue sky rather than the overcast and windy weather we currently have. Santorini is a volcanic island, so the beaches are black sand and the main towns are built up on the rock face of the caldera. They still use donkeys to transport people and building materials up and down the narrow alleyways which link all the houses amd apartments together.
We've done a couple of great clifftop walks, today we walked about 3 hours from Oia back to Fira and the wind was blowing a gale. Yesterday we hired a Smart car and drove all around the island, great fun and the sun popped out a little bit. Most of the island is closed up now because it's out of season, it's hard to imagine how busy it must be in the summer months when it looks deserted now. Luckily Fira is still quite busy with the locals so the shops and some restaurants are still open, as is the local kebab house who we've become friends with ! (new addiction to chicken kebabs)
We're planning on staying here until Saturday before hopping over to a different island for a few days.
