Hello again !
So, we had a lovely day in Berat seeing the sights, there was a big castle complex where the people still live and of course, we ventured out that evening for round 2 of trying to eat out in Albania ! This time, we went to a grill restaurant - I ordered the grilled chicken, James the piglet ribs and we ordered some grilled vegetables and croquettes to accompany this delight. Soooooo . . . . some pork 'rissoles' arrived - hmmm we thought, not quite ribs but never mind - then my chicken was substituted with lamb (although that was yummy) and then James ribs turned up - turned out the croquettes were not potato as we had envisaged but were pork ! Within James' pork ribs was a random chicken wing and finally when we finished everything the vegetables turned up !!
Suffice to say, we were craving a bit of home cooking and normality so we left Berat the next day to drive to Greece - well, the roads were worse than experienced before, the poor car went over so many pot holes we both wondered if we would make it to the border. I hadn't mentioned before but there are multiple police stops in Albania, sometimes as often as every 1,000 metres. We got pulled over a couple of times but a cheery English hello usually scared them away as they clearly didn't speak enough English to discuss anything with us !
Finally we made it to the border and after a quick once over by border control (he opened the boot, the plant nearly fell on him, and he knocked around the boot a bit) we were into the delights of Greece and their lovely smooth roads. We had a one night quick stop in Ioaninna and then drove over 400kms straight to Athens. We have found a campsite just outside and today we took the bus in - it was a lovely sunny day so our photos of the Acropolis, Parthenon and temples have come out really well. Unfortunately, the Partenon is spoilt by lots of scaffolding, diggers and portacabins but we had a lovely day exploring the city.
We have booked to move on, on Saturday, leaving the car and tent behind and to start a bit of island hopping - first stop a 7 hour boat trip to Santorini for a few nights.
Love to you all x x
