Hi guys.... So, you've probably noticed that I'm not that great at updating... But yeah, so I'm in São Miguel now, but I'll tell you about my week in Fortaleza first.
So, as mentioned before, in the hostel I'm staying in I met some very nice people! Everyday I had the opportunity to go explore the city with someone. This one day I went into town for lunch with some doctors from Fortaleza, it was very pleasant, as they really showed me some spots in the city, and actually did some explaining of the main aspects of the city. That same evening I went to a pre-carnaval party at the beach. It was super busy but also lots of fun! I did a lot of dancing to some of the local samba bands! It was lovely seeing the party atmosphere in Brazil. And wat surprised me most was that the next day (Saturaday), as I was taking an early morning walk, the whole party area had been cleaned and cleared off before 11 o'clock! And this is Brazil!
On the Saturday evening one of the girls staying at the hostel for a longer period of time took me to one of the local dance school block parties. This was even beter than the pre-carnaval party, as it was a much smaller gathering and thus much more personal. Here we really danced our feet off! We even got taught by one of the school professionals! I hadn't danced as much since I don't know when!
On the Monday I joined a tour group to three beaches to the east of Fortaleza, Praia do Morro Branco, Praia das Fontes, and Canoa Quebrada. The first two beaches are next to each other and we took a buggy ride along the dunes and beaches. It was a lot of fun! And I got supperr!! burned as well Praia do Morro Branco is famous for its multi-coloured sand dunes. With these different coloured sands, the locals make very pretty sand pictures in glass jars. The colours range from light beige to a faint violet. The pictures they make are amazing. Praia das Fontes is famous for its natural springs coming out of the dunes. At one of the stops along the buggy ride, we took a refershing shower in a small cave along the beach. Very pretty and the water amazingly fresh and clear. The buggy ride ended in a small lake just off of the ocean. To get to the lake we passed a lot of bumps, which made us laugh quite hysterically on the buggy as we were almost thrown off.
Canoa Quebrada is a more touristy beach, with a lot of foreign restaurants and sleeping locations. What brings fame to this place is the symbol that has become quite know in these areas of the moon and the star from the muslim country flags. Locals here, used to make art on giant tortoise shells. One of the locals some years ago took an order from a muslim guy, and the rest of the artists really took a liking to the moon and star. So, this symbol was sketched onto the dunes, and has made the beach famous for it!
So this was my experience in Fortaleza! The hostel people were extremely kind, and so I'll be sure to return there before coming back to Europe in June!

Dearest Erika, I've just read your stories and experiences until now. And seen the flourishing scenes. Interesting to read and looks good, compared with the Dutch snow and icy weather. I envy you there in, far away, Brasil. Carry on, dear cousin, from Amstelveen with love, jan van zanen.
