Got up to have our breakfast of bread, butter and jam, and a cup of coffee for Erin and Steph at 7.45. It's quite nice having the breakfast provided for you as a lot of people in the hostel end up coming down at the same time and you can chat about the best things to do.
Our bus was quite late picking up people from various places in the area. OUr first stop was the War remnants museum. It was very interesting but for some reason we were only given 30mins to walk around it and there was quite a bit to see. The photographs they had were so shocking and disturbing, just as bad as the ones we saw at Tuol Sleng Museum. There was one of an American GI holding up half a body of a Vietnamese man who had been blown up by a grenade! I won't tell you any more of the photos, it is simply too morbid.
Quite annoyed that we only got half an hour to see around somewhere you'd think would be a main stop, but hopeful that the rest of the tour would be just as interesting, we jumped back onto the air-con bus. Next stop was Reunification Palace (or, as our guide pronounced it, 'resignification palace'). Apart from the surrounding gardens, the palace really was not impressive- outside and in. The tour around the palace consisted of 'Ladies and gentlemen... my group...if you let me a will tell you a bit about here...here is a room with chairs.... here is another room with chairs.... here is a basement'. Needless to say, we dragged our feet around that place, staying only for the fact that we were paying for it. This tour lasted about 1.5hrs which we would have happily had at the museum instead. Leaving the "palace", we were already asking our guide when we were getting our lunch that is included in the price (it was half 11 at this stage). We had 3 more places to go before food- Notre Dame Cathedral, the Post Office (yes, it is an attraction apparently) and City Hall. Notre Dame was built by the French when they were here but it is not nearly as good as the one in Paris, this one has stone where the Rose Window is in the original. Can't say much about the Post Office and City Hall except they were in a nice part of town.
Getting back on the bus to head for lunch, our guide informs us that lunch is included in the price if it is up to a dollar, anything more than that and you have to pay. At his "office" where we had lunch (must have been his friends/familys cafe) the girls and I searched the menu for something below a dollar (17000dong). We had a choice of scrambled eggs and bread, boiled eggs and bread, fried eggs on bread... you get the picture. "Eggs and bread then girls?" Chatted to a lovely couple from New Zealand, about what I can't even remember now but they were very friendly.
Fed and watered we reluctantly got back on the bus pretty much convinced the rest of the day would be as riveting as the morning had been. It was. Chinatown didn't seem very Chinese, the market was an Asian TK Max with rude vendors and the pagoda was alright but wasn't really supposed to be in the tour anyway.
Finally reaching the end of the tour (we really enjoyed that tour), we were dropped off at the guides "office". Having 4hours to kill before our sleeper bus, we went back to Highlands coffee for a drink and then dinner as we had already checked out from our hostel.
After dinner went back to our hostel to pick our bags up, we were actually offered the free dinner anyway and were given cups of tea- Thank you Madame Cuc!! Sadly left the hostel with hugs from the staff and headed for our bus.
