Happy Pancake Day! Yes this truly is celebrated here! Today I watched people in the main street have pancake races! It was televised, had an announcer, and a huge crowd whooping and hollering cheering on people running and flipping pancakes! It was awesome to say the least!
Let's back it up a bit to cover the last few weekends. We went to our first rugby match here to support the London Irish! It was so much fun. We met for breakfast with a group of friends at Hope Tap. Nothing like a beer and eggs to kick off a Sunday! There is a running joke here that my name is actually Dave, because one of our friends kept forgetting my name and he just decided Dave was easiest to remember. I guess this coincides with a popular TV show out here so everyone gets a kick out of it. It just so happened that there were two Daves already with us that day, so everyone became a Dave. Erin was deemed "Lady Dave". We had a blast with the Daves! It was cold, and our team lost, but the day was filled with good beer, big laughs, and great friends!
Erin and I love playing board games! As previously mentioned, everything here is really expensive, so to buy a board game that we already have at home seemed a little silly. Instead, I surprised Erin with a homemade version of one of our favorites: Sorry! Supplies were limited, but it turned our pretty nice. (See pics to view awesomeness.) We have been playing it a lot!
This past weekend we went out with some of our friends to an awesome Indian restaurant. The food was so good! We have been craving going back there ever since!
The following day we tried to get hold of some cheap tickets to Matilda the Musical in London. Sadly we missed out on the tickets. Apparently, that theater has sold out every show since it started and people queue for the student tickets starting at 7AM every single day. We had no idea. This did however open up our day to roam around London and see some places we had not yet gotten to. We went back to Covent Gardens to watch some street performers during the morning. And after lunch we made our way to Regent's Park. This is probably our favorite park in London. It was huge! We could have spent hours wandering around through the beds of flowers, small ponds, and beautifully paved paths.
On the far side of Regent's Park is the London Zoo. We had wanted to go there, until we saw how expensive it was. Fortunately, we had heard that you can sometimes sneak a peak of the giraffes from over the fence. Erin loves giraffes, so we had to give it a try. Not only did we get to watch the giraffes, but also zebras and penguins! Erin took some great pics! Who needs to pay to go to the zoo when you can walk around the outside for free and still see the animals!
Not too far from the zoo is Primrose Hill. From here we could see the whole town! It was very pretty. All of the major buildings and the London Eye was visible at the top of the hill. Fortunately, it was a nice day and visibility was clear! It was so wonderful!
As for news from Reading, we hear the rain is supposed to slow down. We have had one of the wettest winters in some 200 years. The weather channel here is not very accurate, but it is calling for no rain in the next 10 days. This is really exciting for us. As much as you all are wishing for the snow to quit, we want the sun! We especially want some sun for when Erin's parents will be here next week! It is crazy how fast that came up! We are very excited for them to come see our place and for us to travel to Brussels, Amsterdam, and Switzerland with them! It is going to be a blast! More adventures to come!
Cheers,
John and Erin
