Bad planning. It's straight uphill out of the B&B and breakfast is thinking about making a comeback. It was supposed to be a flat day and we get set for what was planned to be up to 150k.
A few more castles and the oldest bike cafe in England to see before we hit the cultural centre that is Liverpool.
A quick stop at Whittington Castle (no links to d*** and streets paved with gold) for ice cream. Although, unusally it is owned and managed by the locals, hence it was free and they were really friendly.
Onto Chirk castle, owned by the Myddleton family (no relation to Kate or Pippa) which like all proper castles is at the top of a hill. Fairly impressive and laid to seige in the English civil war. The royalist occupiers were holed up against the Parliamentarians but luckily for the castle its owner happened to be a Parliament General so refused to inflict any damage. After Chales I was beheaded in 1649 and Cromwell faffed about a bit he switched sides again and supported the new restored Stewart monarchy of Charles II.
Bike cafe closed......
verrreeee crosssss de meeerseee.... to translate, we decided the ferry across the Mersey would be the best way into Liverpool and were not disappointed. Apart from Anfield all the famous sights of Liverpool are on the waterfront so we saw the Royal Liver building and the cathedral to name but all of them on the way in.
Headed out to Albert Dock for curry and beer of the day - Kingfisher - all but British.
