For mum:
Weare both very safe and well, if a little smelly and tired! We arrived on time and got a taxi into Bangkok, to be greeting by a well travelled looked Ollie who marched us over to Beth who was relaxing with her dinner in a cafe. Not adjusted to the heat, with all our bags, and about 4 hours sleep, we ran behind him sweating, trying desperately to dodge the street sellers and stray dogs. We had some pizza (very cultural) and were relieved to hear Beth had checked us into a cheap and comfortable guest house on Ko San road. She forgot to mention the four flights of stairs and pounding music from the three cafes below us. I think it was a cunning plan to keep us awake so we would go out drinking with them. It worked and we headed out for beers and shisha. Several pints and a bucket of whisky later we retired to our 'balcony' for drinking games and crisps.
One sweaty sleep later I awoke to the sounds of angry Thai people banging on doors. Perhaps the riots have started again? I thought, panic striken, but soon remembered that this is how all Thai people speak, and concluded they were more than likely having a conversation about the weather. We left early and went on a boat ride through the canals of Bangkok. Beth and Ollie were peeved about the price, Josh and I were too tired to care. We wanted to sit and not have to think! It turned out to be relaxing and interesting, all were pleased! Then we bought some fruit and wondered some markets till it was time to say our goodbyes.
Josh and I explored the palace and got some lunch in a vege cafe. Then we did some more drinking and collapsed at a (slightly) earlier time.
Flights to Vietnam went smoothly (despite me stressing we werent going to make it) They drive like maniacs when you have all the time in the world and then, when you need to be somewhere, they decide to take scenic routes past traffic jams and crashes and old people crossing the road. When we arrived in Vietnam I let Josh take control (feeling a little weary) We found a taxi and the address of a recommended hostel, so that we couldn't be mistaken and coned as we had read about so often. Two English guys were heading the same way so we jumped in a taxi with them. Trusting a guy with long finger nails and a crooked smile is never a good idea, when he started to play 80's techno at full volume we really started to worry. He took us to some backstreet where we were met by his friend who tried to tell us we were at the right hostel, he even had their busness card! We made a quick escape and found it ourselves, feeling cheated (and a little stupid) The hostel was full. We found another. And booked onto a trip to Halong bay.
We have done the trip but I'm running out oftime, and Josh is sat outside with our bags, probably fed up, so I will write about it at the next opportunity!
Missing everyone at home and sending lots of love,
Emily and Josh
