Leaving westport and heading to Lake Mahinapua we set off and stopped at Cape Foulwind (ahahahaha) and we went for a 40minute walk along the coast which was quite nice although everyone was still half asleep and not really bothered bout doing anything but we did get to see some seals and seal pups which was cool! We also got a really nommy icecream which defo made up for the walk! Some bird which i cant remember the name of, i have a picture i'll put on facebook of it, it is kind of chicken sized and brown (not a chicken!) and it got on our bus and started eating peoples bags HAHA was funny.
We also stopped off at Greymouth where we had about 45 mins to run round the shops to find fancy dress for tonight because we were having a P-Party (anything beginning with P) at the Poo Pub! Me and Charlotte decided to go as Peace Keepers/Makers... basically we just wanted to dress up as hippies! it was fun! Miranda went as a nutty Professor and Holly went as a Plastic bag! Was so much fun all getting ready! Although the hostel we stayed at which was in the middle of nowhere! Well it was a bit of a dump to be honest, rooms stank! and so did the bar! The old man, Les, that runs it is a bit of a legend but what a weirdo! very blunt. very odd. He cooked us steak for dinner which was pretty yum! The 'party' was pretty good, everyone was drinking away and was just a good chance for everyone on the bus to get to know each other better and just break the ice a bit. Tom won the fancy dress competition as a pirate in pyjamas with a clown face?! random but really cool and he won a canyon swing! well good!! The only thing was even though they said their alcohol was the cheapest around, soooo not true, couldnt afford to drink much! Most the guys were smashed and decided to go for a swim in the lake later... coldddd haha I never even saw the lake, it was raining and cold and i just didnt even think to walk to it and have a look. oops. never mind.
In the morning I had to repack my whole bag which put me in a really bad mood coz it takes so long and is soo boring and i know when i next open my bag itll explode again because the top i want is always right at the bottom/i just cant find it. grr. We only had a short drive today though to Franz Josef. we stopped at the Bushman museum where we saw live possums! I'd never seen a possum before, they're quite cool! There was a joke look-in hole by the possums and wehn you lifted the flap it sprayed water at you and at one point someone must have opened it and it sprayed really far and got my on the back of my legs and i was like Oh My GOD a possum has just projectile peed over my legs!! i really thought a possum had peed all over me, thankfully not! ew. We also watched a short film called "when Bambi was a terrorist" and it was all about how they used to catch deer/shoot them. it was not very nice and very graphic for early in the morning! In the reception they had some funny stuf so me and charlotte were tried on a couple of hats and took a couple of pictures and then this lady came running over and had a massive go at us. she was way over the top. i was like you could have just said please dont take pictures with the hats. literally not a big deal. b****. i hate it when people over react, so i know the only way to piss them off more is to find it funny and laugh. so i apologised for taking photos and looked very happy with myself. it made me feel good because she made me really angry. :)
Me, Charlotte and Miranda booked on to do an afternoon of kayaking on the lake by Frank Josef which is meant to be amazing with a mirror lake area. but i think it was just from exhaustion and i didnt feel very well so i didnt end up going. i figured it would be better to rest and feel better for ice walk tomorrow then go kayaking and feel worse tomorrow and possibly miss out on the ice walk. sensible thinking, eh. i got most my money back for the kayaking so its all good. We got up at like 6am and it was still dark outside! Us four girls were staying in a little cabin at the hostel which was cool but meant we had to walk to a random building for toilets and showers. We got kitted up with walking boots, cramp-ons, wet weather clothes, i think my feet are quite small coz i ended up with size 1 boots! They drove us up to the Franz Josef car park and we had to walk through the rainforest to get to the valley and when we came out we got divided into 5 groups. group 1 for the very fit and confident down to group 5 for those just wantin to take their time adn take pictures. I thought group 3 would be good for me, but they needed more people to go in group 5 and a lot of people were like "im not goin in group 5, thas pathetic.. bla bla bla" i was like its not pathetic if you're fitness isnt so good, that really pissed me off people saying that so i went in group 5 coz that doesnt bother me, its jst the walking slow that got a bit annoying. Our group was mostly of Kiwi people from our bus and so actualy it was really nice being with them and it was just like a leisurely walk around which was really cool and we kept having to stop so we wouldnt catch up with the groups in front so i dont actualy think it made any difference being in whichever group! We had to walk through tight crevasses which was cool! it wasnt cold on the glacier, the wind was really warm which was odd but the wind/waterproofs we were given were awesome for walking through the crevases and not getting you cold! The ice was such an amazing blue, i was prepared for seeing dust and stuff but not the blue-ness! i loved it! i loved the whole day! i think its a very close second best day just after our kayak trip in abel tasman! and doing the full-day is a must! half day doesnt get very high up so you dont get such awesome views and you dont get very long on the glacier. such a waste!
we thought we'd save money and cook rice with chopped up ham and some sweet and sour sauce. fail. tasted pretty plain and ew lol oh well. it was cheap i suppose!
The next morning we headed to Wanaka! The weather in the morning and most the day was really really awful and pouring with rain! Then we caught up with the sun! it was really cool because we were literally chasing the sun, i could see it on the road in front, the clouds must have been moving very fast! we stopped off at Lake Hawea and took some amazing pics of the water and the mountains! really gorgeous! We checked in at Base Wanaka which was quite nice! We had a wander round the shops in town and were enjoying the sunshine! i bought some awesome aqua coloured boardshorts - hell yea! woo! and we got ourselves an ice cream and sat by the lake watching the rain slowly creep over the mountains in the distance and slowly make its way towards us!
Right after dins i started to not feel very well and was like OMG i need the loo so bad and to avoid anyone hearing me on the loo i went in the disabled toilet and put the shower on and it was all fine and dandy until i opened the door into the corridor and realised the water had flooded out of the room onto the corridor floor. ahahahahaha and there were two girls from the dorm opposite standing there watching it and were like what the hell is going on?! I was like um i turned the shower on, it must hav flooded out.. oops! then i ran away and hid in my room! lol altho i didnt hide for long coz i felt so ill i ended up curling up in the normal girls toilets for a couple of hours... not cool. felt very sorry for myself lol.
Felt a bit better in the morning as we headed off to puzzling world which i was really excited for! there were 3 "puzzling" rooms, the first was a big room and the walls had face imprinted in them and it was really weird because as you walk in to the room it looks like the heads are following you! the next room was at a really steep angle and it had a sliding chair which looked as tho it was sliding upwards! and all sorts of random shizzle which started to make us feel a bit nauseous staying in there too long. would not have been good on a hangover! the 3rd room was awesome with the 2 sides of the room making you look tall in one and small in the other! There was also a maze outside but it got kind of boring to be honest! After we then headed towards Queenstown stopping at a Bungee site for us to watch a short film on bungee and for people to sign up! we also watched some crazy chinese tourists jumping off a 43m bungee at the centre! looks pretty cool! We were then taken into Queenstown centre!
