This past weekend we went down to Koh Samet for a weekend in paradise. We took a van from Bangkok and then a speedboat from the pier. It was about a 3 hour drive and then 10 minute boat ride in total. The boat dropped us off right on the beach, literally in the water. So off your sandals come and you just walk through the water onto the beach and grab a spot on the beach for some food and beers. We rented a bungalow for about 800 baht which is about $25 Canadian. It was a bit of a dive but had air conditioning and a bed. All we really needed. The beach is just lined with resorts and you can just walk along the water and choose a place to hang out in. Once the sun goes down they lay huge beach mats on the sand and lay out a about 20 or 30 low tables and some cushions and you just walk up and sit down on the ground to eat under the stars. The food was incredible and both nights we were able to watch fire shows from our beach tables.
During the day on Saturday we lay on the beach the entire day to get some sun. Then some other students came down and we had some dinner and got some drinks. Our food that day included fried bananas (which were amazing, they were deep fried not just tossed around in a wok), banana pancakes (WITH syrup!!!), chicken nuggets and corn. All of which sound really normal or satisfactory but to us it was a treat! That night we had some drinks with everyone and went to the club Silversands. Here we watched the most amazing fire show. There was a skipping rope that they light on fire and everyone is invited to go through, if you do you get a free shot. Nic and I just watched. Then there was fire limbo which was insane. A lot of tourists did this one until it got too low and then just the thai fire people did it. They contorted themselves into something I'd never seen before or even thought possible. Some would put a cigarette in their mouth then limbo under and light it on the pole.
Sunday we got crepes as we were told Silversands resort on Koh Samet has the best crepes in all of Thailand. They were pretty amazing but I think the Crepe place in Tremblant would give it a pretty good run. So it was back out to the beach after breakfast for some fun in the sun. Fun in the sun also included getting massages on the beach. The massages were excellent and really cheap, they also gave us some much needed energy. Then we walked through the island and down to catch the ferry to head back home to Bangkok.
It was a really amazing place that we definitely would go back to. Although the food was incredible, we never could really anticipate what we were going to get. One time Nic asked for a banana because you can usually just get any fruit at any point in time but he got four peeled and plated. He also asked for a ham and cheese omelet one time but he got a tomato filled one instead. We told the waiter who was walking by with another plate and he just offered Nic the plate he was holding like, "well, do you want this." We also had a good hour where we brainstormed what we really miss from home. Nic misses sandwiches, breakfast, egg mcmuffins, clean air. I miss Starbucks, breakfast, nachos and potatoes. We both miss correctly spelt advertisements. For example we got off the ferry to a sign that said "Thank you for the passenger Bon Voyage." We do not miss rice nor do we crave horse face and chicken ligament. We also do not miss -30 degree weather. HA!
