I have just got back from my 3 day 4wd safari on Fraser Island. Had such a great time....although the weather wasn't great i was in a really good group of 11 people. We camped for two nights right near the beach on the island and travelled around the island during the day by truck...don't worry mum, i didn't drive! Fraser Island is the largest sand dune island with loads of beautiful crystal clear lakes, luch rainforest and white sandy beaches. It even has its own shipwreck..unfortunately it isn't a pirate ship!I can now also relate to Mark drivingon the beach in Nantucket (think you spell it like that!) 'which way are the wheels turning!!' Though we did let our tyres down! On our first day we walked through the rainforest to a lake called Lake Basin which was bright green in colour and so refreshing to swim in after the hot uphill walk. We then drove along the beach 24km to Eli Creek which i was going to float down through the forest until i saw a huge snake swim out of the water!so i walked along it instead until i came across a spider the size of my hand which was when i started to run through it! In the evenings we cooked our food on camping stones in an outdoor kitchen with walls made of spider webs with frequent tarantula decoration!!!HORRIBLE!!!
We slept in tents on the hard, cold sand!!Very good for the back but not if you want to sleep!
The next day we drove to Indian Head and walked along the cliff to the headland where we could see Dolphins swimming below. We then walked so so far along a beach....might as well have been the 71 mile beach! to the champagne pools which are rock pools that fizz and bubble when the waves crash into them. After a swim we walked back along the beach and drove to The Manuca shipwreck which is very spooky and despite not being a pirate ship we still photographed ourselves as pirates in front of it! While driving to to Lake Basin we got stuck in the sand and all had to climb out of the truck and push it....SUCCESS!
On our last day on Fraser Island we drove to Lake Mckenzie which is the most beautiful lake on the island....it wa sof course stunningly beautiful with white sand and clear blue water...typically my camera broke the day before so i didn't get any photos!
Luckily we didn't damage the car in any way so we didn't break our bond and therefore didn't have to pay the $1000 fee we would have had to pay had we broken down!
I am now in Airlie Beach after a 13 hour bus trip and today i am going on a three day boat trip around the Whitsundays ....
Doind a diving course.....
One proper dive.....
