We got the bus yesterday from Taupo. It was only a 2 hour drive to Napier but the scenery was absolutely fantastic, rolling hills and meadows, I mention this because there was no photo that I could use to represent Napier until I upload some more photos so thought the picture above was slightly reminiscent of the journey (clutching at straws basically).
Napier is absolutely beautiful. If anyones ever in the North Island and you get chance you most come and see the city if only for a few hours (theres not much to do after that anyway). It was completely flattened in 1931 by an earth quake which measured 7.2 on the rictar scale (sorry for spelling or any incorrect historical details I might relay) and so was rebuilt within 2 years in the Art Deco style. The buildings and artitecture are gorgeous our photos don't do them justice at all.
When we arrived it was pretty late on so went to hostel which had been recommended in the lonely planet and was in an old Art Deco picture house. It was beautiful but advised us that it was the Art Deco festival weekend and the prices were double! Why didn't anyone tell us this? Oh well. So we trudged all round town and rang every hostel/hotel in town and they were all either silly money or full to the brim, one lovely man in a hostel who obviously thought we were going to have to sleep roough offered us a floor bless, but in the end had to come back to the first hostel and be ripped off!! But its a good weekend to come, theres loads of vintage cars and people dressed up everywhere in the 1920's style and old music blaring into the street. Tonight apparently theres a parade along the front and an air show with old planes so should be nice (and free after being robbed by the hostel).
