So Saturday we had decided to give white water rafting a go (well why not indeed). It was such a laugh and the weather amd the scenery was absolutely gorgeous. We got all kitted up in some rather fetching gear (I think not), Kat seemed to have got the short straw and ended up with a life jacket that was about 10 sizes too big, good job she didn't actually get into any real trouble or she would have come straight out.
Once we got to the river we boarded the raft and had a quick safety talk and instructions on how to actually move and steer the thing and we were off! Wow it was so funny, the first set of rapids we came to the boat just got hit by a massive wave and we were all soaked. You had to keep paddling through the rapids and our instructor was shouting loads of instructions to us but I found it hard to take it all in and just couldn't stop laughing. After we were all suitably soaked we decided to jump in and have a quick swim (don't worry we managed to get back in the boat in time for the next set of rapids unlike some silly people on the raft in front!). Well apart from the freezing water, and the big fish (or so they kept shouting at me but they might have been winding me up), and getting caught against the boat and the rocks in a wave pool, and Kat nearly falling out of her life jacket it was great fun!
That night we hit the town to celebrate our rafting triumph. We even went to the Minus 5 Bar, which as you might have guessed is a bar with a temperature of minus 5 degrees!!! You get togged out in cute little wolly booties and gloves and a big Absolute parka. Eveything inside was made of ice, the bar, the seats, the walls, even the glasses! It was so cool (no pun intended).
After the rafting we hadn't had time for the bungy jump on Saturday so on Sunday got up and planned to go on our way to Milford Sounds. However (and this is no lie) when we got there we got all pumped up and went to pay and were told we had to wait an hour! Well it was a 5 hour drive to Milford sound and was already getting on so we decided we didn't really have time to wait. I know your all thinking we chickened out but its not true ha ha, will have to keep an eye out for another one somewhere else on our travels I guess!
So we drove the long drive to Milford Sound, which is actually a fiord I believe and is supposed to be the eigth wonder of the world (they say that about a lot of things though). Apparently you can see dolphins, seals, penguins and amazing mountains and ice formations, but when we got there all we could see was a lot of rain. We should have guessed by the amount of traffic heading in the other direction really but never mind. We did get out of the car briefly to go to the toilet but basically we just turned round and drove the 2 hours back to Te Anau. So we did go to Milford Sound but couldn't tell you what it was like!
Back in Te Anau we laughed at how pointless our day had been no bungy, no Milford sound so then just to top it off Kat decided to lock the keys in the boot of the car! After several discussions of how to get in using a coat hanger and then remembering we had no coat hanger we rang the AA man. So we sat and waited like 2 dumb blondes for the AA man to rescue us... its all good fun eh?
Today we have driven to the city of Dunedin. Its supposed to be a lovely old historic university town but seems a bit boring so far. Off to see some penguins and seals tommorrow though seen as we missed them at Milford Sound ha ha.
