Little Corn Island is a small gem of an island off the Caribean coast of Nicaragua. It is a actual paradise and it should be with the difficulty it took to get there. With the advice of a local we chose to stay on the more secluded side of the beach that consisted of three small resorts of beach huts. The huts were thrown together with what seemed to be washed up timber but we happily accepted it would be our home for the next three days. Inside there were comfy beds with mosquito nets and a small bathroom with a temperamental shower. During the day the electricity didn´t work so we spent our mornings lying on the beach or swimming in the sea. Due to the tropical nature of the island but lunch time although the heat remained the sun often disappeared.
We found solice in the form of the Nicarguan Rum Flors de Caña which we drank in a small hut on the beach as we watched the storm come in from the sea. It is this rum we can thank for making all of our friends on the island as everyone seemed to want to join us for a drink. We shared conversation in a mixture of mashed up languages due to the multicultural nature of our table. We met Darriel, the local who took an instant shine to Lottie, that spoke English,Spanish and Creol (the native language) then there was Dave, the Austrian, who spoke English German Spanish and French plus a little Mandarin. The we met two French guys that spoke French (obviously) Spanish and very little English. The conversation was interesting to say the least and it was hard not to feel a little stupid by how little of other languages we knew. I spent my evening trying to speak my Spanglish to a very patient French guy called Flo which I´m sure was amusing for everyone. This was our pattern for the course of our stay on Little Corn and one night we even paid a visit to a local night club where we all impressed the locals with our dance moves...
I think Kella would say that the highlight of this section of our trip would be the first night when we walked through the woods in the dark to get some dinner. I have never seen so many crabs in all my life and they are a lot scarier in the dark me and lottie shrieked and jumped our way through the woods! Kella got to re-live these moments of me and Lottie screaming through the woods on our last night in Little Corn when Flo found a huge crab by the beach and decided to chase me in the dark with it (although i think she was a little bit scared too)!
I think we would all say that this was one place we did not want to leave and on the final day when we boarded the boat we were all pretty sad to say goodbye to the sea and our nice beach hair!
