Rio dulce is less of a river and more of a swamp! In fact our two night spent here were actually spent sleeping in wooden shacks above the swamp! our biggest achievement to date is suviving two full nights without falling in!
It wasn´t the ugly, pungent type of swamp that you would usually expect. This swamp was more pictuesque as far a swamps can be. Our huts were sheltered under large leafy trees and our rooms connected by narrow wooden floating paths. The bonus of this place was a large swimming pool which eased the pain of humidity.
We arrived late so the first date we literally ate dinner and headed to our room. Inside our room were three single beds with white hanging mosquito nets which made us feel like princesses! We soon drifted off into a plesant slumber until... we were awoken to the loud crashes of thunder so bright and loud that they shoot our small floating huts. The noise was too loud and scarily close to ignore. There was no need to peek out of the window to catch a glimpse of the lightning because each flash lighted up our room. It was just our luck that all three of us decided we needed the toilet at this precise moment and so donned our waterproof and made the terrifying journey across the narrow wooden path hovvering over the swamp as the rain pelted the ground. We made it back to our room and in one piece and as the thunderstorm moved on we slowly drifted back to sleep!
The next day we decided to take a day trip to the local town of Livingston, a known Rasta town. We took a boat down the river stopping to drink from coconuts and admire the locals hand made jewellery. We arrived at Livingston and noticed the immediate contrast to Antigua. The people were far more Caribbean in nature, chilled out and relaxed, and shamelessly cashed in on Bob Marley pariphenalia. We walked to their ´beach` which was more of a cliff with a drop down to the sea and then we had luck were Lottie and Kella tried the local seafood soup that came complete with a full fish and crab! It was delicious and I think everyone was sorry to leave this small town. On our way back to the swamp we stopped at a hot springs where we had a dip in the rather smelly waters!
Back at the swamp we jumped in the pool and started our own jacuzzi party with all our new friends on the tour!
