Heading Downtown on the bus along Broadway whilst I was gazing out of the window several skateboarders came riding by. This impressed me. I soon realised, along with every other passenger, that this was part of something much bigger. Out of the ordinary. swarms of 100's of boarders quickly took possesion of the road, forcing all other traffic to a holt. Googling it later that day I discovered that it is annual event called the Broadway Bomb.
The weather is hot. I ate a Gyros from a street vendor and headed into the cool of The American Museum of Natural History. The suggested enterance price is $19.00.......suggested. Mary Miller, the cashier explained that I can pay a price I feel appropriate. Slightly annoyed that there was a fee given that most museums in central Londan are free I offered to pay $15.00.
Mary answered with a wink and a gesture, "One dollar. Yes of course." then proceeded to print out my ticket as I handed over a dollar bill. I complimented her on her fancy dress Cleopatra wig. To which she replied in delight "oh thank you. I've been battling cancer."
Once my desire for the ground to swallow me whole had subsided we continued to chat for more than five minutes about Occupational Therapy, suggested exercises and therapy. Lovely Lady.
I was supposed to meet my newest travel friend Alison, from New Zealand at 5:30 pm at South Ferry. By the time I'd popped into The Plazza Hotle for a wee and caught the bus that became delayed caused by the demonstrations on Broadway I didn't arrive until 6:15pm. She's gone.
I boarded the Staten Island Ferry just in time to get some pics of the sun droppong below the horizon. Lady Liberty's torch beaming bright. I had intended to make my way from Statten Island to Coney Island. A lack of knowledge of how to get there and the onset of tireness defeated me. I returned to the hostel.
Trying to take a picture of myself in Times Square early on Sunday morning wasn't easy. The place wasn't bustling with many people to ask for assistance. My friend Claire had set me the challenge of taking a picture of The Naked Cowboy. He wasn't around. Great shame.
In the Hell's Kitchen Flea market I was overwhelmed with sentiment when I spotted my mum's dinner service for sale. I certainly didn't think I'd be seeing that so soon after I'd left home!
Lunch today consisted of a mexican salad bowl purchased from a fast food restaurant inside the Empire State Building. More impressively a Margarita for $6.00! On Fifth Avenue I stopped outside the Apple Store to look at the tributes to recently deceased Steve Jobs. The F.A.O toy store still has the giant piano from the film "Big" and I manage to catch a performance of the chopsticks song.
Most first time visitors to NYC go to the Empire State Builing for a skyline view of the city. All returning visitors know that the views from the "Top of the Rock" offer an alternative and more impressive view. I wasn't disappointed! I spent two hours admiring the changing views as day turn into night. Breathtaking!
