G'day Guys!!
An early start this morning - up at 6 for our Groovy Grape tour of Barrossa Valley.
The day started by us being collected by Colin Mcrae - AKA Ally the bus driver - she was crazy!! After about 40 minutes dashing round the city to collect our tour buddies, we were on our way to our 1st stop - The World's Largest Rocking Horse. This stands at 18.3m and weighs 25 tonnes. We only had 25 mins stop here, so we quickly grabbed a coffee and something to eat, and then embarked upon our climb up the rocking horse. We had a brief look around before moving on.
Our next stop was Orlando winery - the home of Jacobs Creek. After a short tour we were taught how to correctly taste wine and got on with plenty of tasting - whites, rose, reds and port.
From here we headed to our 2nd winery - VineCrest. Here we tasted a further 8 wines. Vinecrest are the current holders of "Australia's Best Merlot" title.
We then moved onto Richmond Grove winery, which is Jacob Creeks sister company. Here we had a tour and talk on the history and process of wine making, before getting on with our 3rd lot of wine tasting - before lunch!!
After plenty of drinking we went out to the gardens of the vineyard and had a BBQ lunch, including kangaroo. We had a little walk around the gardens and then jumped back into the bus for our last winery.
Bethany Winery, this was the smallest winery of our tour. But as the town of Bethany, founded in 1842, only has a population of 130 it is to be expected. Just a short walk from the winery is a great view of the Barrossa valley, where we spent some time taking in the scenery.
We then headed onto our final stop - the Whispering Wall. This is a huge damm built at the turn of the 1900's and holds all of the water for the Barrossa Valley. The damm is 150m long and if you stand at one end and talk, it can be heard clearly at the other. We tested this out and the German guy that was on our tour could even hear our camera taking photos. The amazing accoustics of this damm were discovered when the wall was in its final stages of completion and an employee was whinging about the boss at one end of the damm and the boss heard him at the other - subsequently sacking the employee.
We then had a 2 hour drive back to Adelaide, so decided to stop for icecreams on the way back to the hostel.
We hope everyone is well and you're not too cold back in sunny England!!
Love you loads,
Emma and Lee
