So Lima, what can I say, it´s been an experience. Not an experience I´m in a massive hurry to repeat, but we do have 4 weeks to get over the shock. We arrived at Lima airport at 5.30am having flirted with sleep whilst on the flight from Atlanta, I ask you, why must they tell you all the time there is going to be turbulence? I can feel it...
A half hour taxi ride took us into downtown Lima with our nerves in pieces and our ears bleeding. Rules don´t appear all that important on the roads of Peru´s capital, liberal use of the horn and bit of nip, tuck and don´t worry about the paint job (or any of the panels being as the designer intended) and you get to your destination with a fresh new outlook on life and being alive.
Being so early we couldn´t check into our hotel, however they were kind enough to relieve us of our bags and give us some maps of the area, so as to complete the tourist fresh off the plane look. We dutifully head off into down town Lima to explore the sights... or the ones that are open at 7am. Not five minutes into our journey and we were acosted by a homeless man who wanted to show us where we wanted to go. My reluctance to talk to him and our clear lack of Spanish did nothing to deter his perseverance, but we got away unscathed and at the square we were aiming for. We spent a portion of the morning wandering the streets of downtown Lima, marvelling at the stunning colonial architecture and frankly bizarre baroque church.
Having seen as much as we thought we needed to, we got in a taxi headed for the museum of anthropology. I looked on the map and it seemed to be quite close, our taxi journey suggested otherwise. After braving the streets of Lima for another half hour, we arrived at the museum. We spent a good couple of hours enjoying the ancient Peruvian remains, paying particular attention to the erotic display. We had a lovely lunch and then headed back to the hotel.
The hotel is basic, but at $28 for both of us including breakfast, who´s complaining? Having booked our buses and hostels for the next couple of days we are off to relax in the hotel restaurant and enjoy a well deserved nights rest in a proper bed. Next stop Ica.
