Day two in Ica. Another crack of dawn start as our tour guide picked us up from the hostel at 7am. We then drove to Paracas, which is an hour and half up the coast from Ica to go out to the Ballestas Islands. We arrived to find a large group, consisting of a variety of nationalities and thankfully and enthusiastic English speaking tour guide. We boarded the good ship Penelope, which was actually a large motor boat with two six cylinder 200 BHP outboards. We set off into the bay and almost immediately saw a pod of bottlenose dolphins rising up from the water, many oohs, ahhs and some blurred photography we head off toward the islands.
We travelled for about 20 minutes and reached the islands which were literally swarming with pelicans, cormorants, boobies and a solitary turkey vulture. Sea lions lazed on the rocks, a particularly large bull sea lion didn't seem massively impressed with us invading his hareem (Emma says I'm not allowed a hareem...). Next stop was the gauno production island, which smelled pretty grim, but everyone needs fertilliser right...
We went back to Ica for a meal in the town and paid 25 soles for a huge steak and chips, that's less than a fiver!
Next stop Nazca!
