Hello :)
Vic and me went to Sanyu Babies Home today, as they asked us to go back with forms we needed to fill in. They've excepted us as volunteers and we start tomorrow! We have to be there by 8am to help get the babies us, bathed, dressed, feed and played with. We'll then help out with laundry, preperation of food, cleaning.. And then finish around 6pm. Can't wait, we're both really excited :D
School has been good this week. My class have been behaving theirselves and we've been doing some great wall displays to brighten up the class :)
To sharpen pencils children use razor blades, which I'mproud to say I have got the knack off :) Anyway, I took in a sharpener to speed up the process. The children were swarming me for the pencil sharpenings, I thought because they were making pretty patterns, turns out they like to eat them! :)
I've been down to where the house is being built everyday this week and my builder freinds haven't been there! I think they might of run out of funds or something but it's gutting, as I really did enjoy myself. Hopefully they'll come back soon :)
Also the gardening at school has come to a stop. Mr Sentogoo gets the boarders at school to do it at weekends and at night, but I've said I'd happily help anytime :)
Next week I'm starting a writing club after school. I think I might call it 'Lovely Letters' ;) Basically it's just to help pupils improve their handwriting.
This week we cooked Matoke for the first time, with help from Madam Jane of course. Matoke is basically a hard banana in potato form.
We mashed it and served it with pasta. It was really nice :) And yesterday we tried Matoke and Ground Nut sauce. Something wen't wrong along the way, as it ended up looking like and tasting like Peanut Butter soup! We could see it being good though, so are going to try it again with Pasta :)
We're going to try and cook some kind of Veggie Burgers next week, using lentils. Should be interesting :) And Madam Jane is going to show us how to make Ugandan cookies and the oh so amazing donuts that Vic and me always buy :D
We tried Mango today.. In Uganda, Ugandans eat fruit that are in season or not! Today was the case :) The first bite was like a hard pear and then your mouth dries up and it becomes very sour but we ate it all :)
At lunch we usually eat our Posho and Beans with a fork. Not sure were they've gone but after a search, we just wen't back to the staffroom and began eating with our hands. It was actually alot easier than we expected. We ate true local style as Mr Omen said :)
Vic and me are currently in competition, tanning wise.. By the end of the year we are going to see who has the best tan, especially on our legs (that are currently looking whiter than I left!) Due to being inside alot of the time and wearing long skirts etc it will be a good challenge ;)
Mum you will be impressed by this.. Mr Sentogoo and Madam Jane both asked were we got our knife from, as it was very good. I said I had sharpened it out on the stone outside! Mum, I really used to watch your wrist action carefully when you sharpened the knife in the kitchen ;)
Rhiannon who left Uganda a few weeks ago wrote us all a letter, as she visited all of our projects before she went home. She said to Vic and me, it was great to see how happy and settled we were and that the only thing we were complaining about was drinking out of plastic cups! That says it all really - Happiness or in Lugandan Sanyu :)
The only sad note of this week is that my amzing jar of squeezy Marmite has come to it's final squeeze! :(
Lots of Love x x x x
