Had a fairly good nights sleep last night although being on the top bunk of a bed with no railings made sure that i woke a few times to make sure i didnt roll off!! Was v conscious of making the wrong move!! ha ha!!
Free breakfast this morning great after no eating much on the bus yesterday! Better than the crazy mexicans - just help yourself to loads of crumpets, croissants, toast, bagels, porrige.... Met Jeremy and Ceri from last nights shenanigans over breakfast and we made a plan to do some serious sightseeing!! Ceri is from Guildford and Jeremy is so camp and hilarious!!
Decided to walk as much as possible so headed for a few hotspots. Have to say the city looks much nicer in the day than it did last night!! Turns out we are in a fantastic location even if we docome down a wierd alley to get here - good old Paris massage neon sigh lights the way!! Seriously that sounds bad but its a great hostel about 5 mins walk from Union Sq. Despite that, the guy on reception labelled my map up with must see things today and also highlighted an area called Tenderloin as a DO NOT go area- that is about 10 mins the other way out of the hostel = we are sandwiched between good and not great! Apparently tenderloin is where all the crazies live but we are OK here! :)
We started our walk towards Coit Tower. All dressed in jeans and trainers as we'd been told it gets cold here. After scaling the dizzy heights of Coit we were regretting that choice and were boiling! thank god for the water fountain at the top! Views were amazing and we paid $5 to go in the elevator to the top of the actual tower for 360 views of the city - really beautiful- the bay, the city, the hills, alcatraz and the bridge - gave a real sense of perspective!
From here we walked to Lombard street - the crookedest street- gave the val de terres a run for its money - so many hairpins in such a short space of time. So funny to see loads of japanese tourists in their trucks driving down it videoing it from the front seat!! We were feeling brave so climbed to the top totake some more pictures. V tired!!
Next onto Fishermans Wharf which was nice but a few too many touristy shops - then onto Pier 39. Still quite touristy but really well done and tasteful with the boardwalks and shops. Completed 1st mission and had photo taken with a fisherman of sorts....photos will show all!! Saw the pontoons of sea lions = amazing as there were so many and i was not expecting it - they were jumping all over each other and making so much noise - shame they smelt so bad!
In true touristy style grabbed some Clam chowder (dad - see simpsons CHOWDER!! HE HE!) served in a sourdough huge bread roll - really good by so big - the pigeons benefitted from us that afternoon!! Wandered around a few of the museum pieces and by the submarines then wanted to get closer to the bridge so walked ALL the way along the coast - navigated expertly by Jeremy whilst Ceri and i lagged behind suffering!! Got all the way to Crissy Fields beach but the fog had rolled in and most of the bridge was obscured!! typical! Anwyay, rested our weary legs and then realised a bus back was the most tempting option!!
Saw a street car coming (the ones with the wires attached) and ran across the road to catch it -laughed so hard as the driver took one look at us and did a U-turn on his cables and drove off in the opposite direction - not impressed but was funny. Luckily we onlywaited about 10 mins for the next one - and that DID stop! After changing to the 38 at Geary we treated ourselves to an AMAZING ice cream at a parlour a bit like shakeaway for ice creams!! Ceri and i chose vanilla mixed with cookie dough, choc chips, fudge and sauce!! SO GOOD eating it in Union Sq - UNTIL.....we were interrupted by a wierdo!!
GREAT STORY = us eating ice cream, crazy guy come over and introduces himself saying his friends tell him he looks like Tom Cruise- he didnt! He asked if i would be his Katie Holmes and said i looked a lot like her (i dont as she is small and brunette!) He kept edging nearer to me as i edged nearer to ceri!! In the end i told him he was putting me off my ice cream - jeremy nearly spat his out laughing!! Eventually the guy left as we got rude and told him where to go...upon which another guy walked past saying - "what a wierdo - i was gonna come save you guys but watching it was so funny!!" Yeah....thanks!! ha ha
Out tonight in SanFran on a hostel bar crawl...next update tomorrow on the nights adventures!! :)
