So my flight was delayed by an hour to fiji so it left at 11.30pm on the 28th January. The flight was 10 and a half hours and i got there on the 30th January. It was so humid when i got there! wasn't prepared for it! Got to my hostel on the mainland in Nadi and chilled out in the clouds and rain for the day as i was leaving for Oarsmans Bay Lodge, an island 5 hours away, the next day. [note to anyone thinking of going to the southern hemisphere...hole in the ozone layer! factor 30 suncream was not enough!]
Headed to the port to get the boat to the island. It was pouring with rain, something that wasn't going to stop for 5 days! The island was nice, but i was the only one on it for 2 days! which was weird! Because of the floods a few weeks before i guess most people had changed their plans and gone elsewhere. On the upside i paid for a dorm room and got my own private bure with a double bed and my own bathroom for 5 nights! Fiji was really boring! Won't be going back. Even though it was cyclone season they still had 3 times as much rain as they were expecting! I had 1 and a half days of cloudy but dry weather towards the end which made up for it.
I did a few activities while i was on the island though. Went sea kayaking in various reefs near the island but the snorkelling was really bad because of the storms! saw about 3 fish and they weren't even exciting ones! Went to church with the local fijian people which was long! Their services are at least 4 hours! Drank Cava with the locals inclusing the chief which was hilarious! Cava is the fijian form of alcohol but it's actually a drug made from the roots of a plant (can't remeber which one). They grind it through a mesh cloth and mix it with water. It tastes disgusting but it's one of their traditions. It numbs your mouth which is funny but all the tourists are immune to it (i guess because we drink alcohol) but it really affects the fijian people. I also weaved bracelets with 'aunt maria', a village woman who wanted to know everything about my family and travels! Really funny old woman!
Other than that i watched hermit crabs fight over shells and the rain pour! fun times!
Was definately glad to leave Fiji, was not at all what i expected and most people i have met who went there didn't like it either! Glad i only spent a week there as i was already bored to death after 2 days!
So on to New Zealand!
