The Weird & Wonderful Adventures of Emma, Len & Jo
Right! Welcome back! Day 2 and we got up at about 5 to have breakfast watching the sun rise over Uluru. What I didnt tell you was that at sunset the colour of Uluru changes getting deeper and deeper red - twas very nice! Anywho, after breakfast we took off to the Olgas, or Kata Tjutas - the things in the picture! And went for a 4hour hike up them. I am not kidding when I saw we literally had to crawl up sections of it on our hands and knees, it was so sheer the rock face - very scary and yet impressive stuff - go us! There was a section of the Olgas called the valley of the Winds and (if you make it that far) it is beautiful. You are standing on mahoosive red rocks overlooking a beautiful green valley and finally feel some wind! Its where the Aboriginals say they hear the voices of the spirits, although the Japanese were more vocal when we were there! I think our group spoilt the atmosphere having 27 group pictures taken as well but nevermind!! We were halfway through but me, Em and Edel chickened out of carrying on down the sheer cliff face (the decision was helped by the fact that we were dying to the loo!), so we went back down the sheer cliff faces we had just climbed! Our method of sliding down on our bums worked a treat and we nicked in with another tour group who looked after us! Ooh, our new tour guide showed us a Euro (a type of kangaroo) and an old man (or my new tour best friend) showed us Hawks and suchlike. Anywho, we made it back eventually although we did nearly die from the heat and the effort of climbing! We were fine when we were on the flats, moving along like sprightly mountain goats we were, but when we had to climb we would get to the top panting like we smoked 40 a day for the last 40 years! That night we were camping at a spot in the bush that Chris had used and prepared in the past. And by prepared, I mean he had gone there and put stones in a circle for a bonfire. There was literally nothing around and we were in the bush (in a floodplain too and the clouds were looking dubious that night!) Anywho we had dinner (only chicken Im afraid) then we sat around the MAHOOOOOOOOSIVE bonfire for ages, even though the walk had tired us out we were very hyper very late at night! I think the beer we were drinking and the fact that to go to the loo we had to take a spade and a loo roll into the bush helped!! It was very funny! Edel wasnt sure of the correct squatting technique so thought she would take her trousers off just in case!! Apparently they could hear us laughing from back in the camp when she told us what she had done!! We apparantly got a reputation as the giggling maniacs of the group but we've been called worse! There was a lot of snoring and Emma woke up to someone throwing twigs at her which was very amusing! She didnt care though and went back to sleep (and no it wasnt me!).
Day three coming up! Lennie xxx
