We arrived in Perth on Sat 14th April and were actually quite cold when we got off the plane. It was a nice relief not to sweat quite so much and we have saved enourmously on the washing! Perth is a nice city with a great view from Kings Park (where we got very lost for about 3 hours). It is pretty similar to an English town but with people speaking with Australian accents (we got very excited when ever we hear any one speak for the first week). We have found that there are an exceptionally high number of Irish living there in the Hostels and it was almost like they have invaded the country! From Perth we went down to Fremantle which is a really cute little port town with loads of markets. It was very chilled out there and we met loads of people in our hostel who arrived backpacking and have stayed for about a year. That Hostel was the one with the bed bug infestation where we had to wash everything in our bags (and bags which have now shrunk slightly) and have our room fumigated - at least we got a free wash though!
We visited the prison in Fremantle which was build by the british convicts in the 19th century and was still used until 1995. It was just like being in Larkhall! We also found a great pub called Little Creatures with its own micro brewery. We really think that Chris should seriously consider this as his future enterprise!Â
We went over to Rottnest Island for a night and stayed in a little wooden shack which was very exciting. The Island is only about 8km across so we decided to hire bikes to see the sights - bloody hell our asses have only just recovered, Em was going to take Ibuprophen to numb the pain! We did get to see the super cute Quokkas (cross between rats and kangaroos). They were really tame and just came over to talk to us on the beach. It was a bit scary at night when they were out in force though (lucky we didn't run any over). The island had a lot of birds too and the hugest crows that would sit and scowl at us while we ate. It was nice to have peacocks walking around though.
