On our last day in Sydney, we climbed the Harbour Bridge. All was good until we walked out onto the gangway to the bridge. You could see through it. Ahhhh! By the time we reached the ladders to the arches, Emily was grey. The actual arches themselves weren't too bad at all and the views were phenomenal. The ladders on the way back down were terrifying, with cars flying past you and nothing to stop you falling.
We had a couple of recovery Stella's afterwards and then jumped on our 15 hour bus trip up the coast to Byron Bay.
On arriving in Byron Bay, we decided to rent a car, seeing as neither of us are "surfies". First stop was Minyon Falls, which was pretty cool, although decided against going to the bottom since we would have to climb back up. We then headed to Rocky Creek Dam, which looked like a wall, but we saw a couple of big old Monitors there.
Next stop was Nimbin. If you are ever in Oz, you have to visit this place. On arrival, we thought it was a gay town, as there are rainbow flags all over the place. As we got out the car, we were offered drugs and realised at this point that we were in the Amsterdam of Australia. There were "coffee shops", and the newsagent advertised that they sell Munchies!!! Classic stuff. The most amazing thing about the place is that there is only 1 bar, and most of the restaurants are strictly no alcohol!!
Back in Byron, we headed out for a few beers. At 9.30pm, we noticed everything was starting to close down. We really couldn't believe this, since no-one actually works in this place. We got chatting to a local guy and he was most perturbed by our comments, saying it is only Monday mate!
The following day, we walked to the most easterly point of Australia, Cape Byron, which was amazing. We then headed off in our speed wagon to Lennox Head, then on to Ballina, where we stopped for lunch. Emily got crudded on by a seagull, which is meant to be lucky, it was more like an omen for the bug she caught. After lunch, over to Lismore which is off the tourist track, and then back to Lennox to catch up with some mates.
We had a great evening out with Steve and Tonya in a sea front pub. It was also fab to meet their daughter Sophie who is very cute. We can see why they made the move from Staines to Oz.
The following day, we headed to Brisbane by bus, and first stop was the Lone Pine Koala sanctuary. It was fab, there were loads of Koalas, Wombats and Kangaroos. We fed the Kangaroos and Em held a Koala. We then headed for Southbank. We spent the rest of the night here, before taking a night ferry back to our hostel.
This morning, we flew up to Proserpine and we are now in Airlie Beach, which is a bit like Ibiza.... Luckily, we are only here over night. Tomorrow, we head out on a 3 day cruise to the Outer Reef and round the Whitsundays for 3 days, before heading out to the outback. Yee-hah.
