G'day!!
We arrived in Oz 4 days ago, and it has been pretty much non stop since.
The weather is around 25c and breezy, which is most welcome after a swetering 37c in Thailand.
The first day, we headed straight to Manly and spent the day monging around. In the evening, it was a case of a few small beers and shopping for packed luches at Aldi, as everything is soooooooo expensive.
The next day, we got up late (not adjusted to Oz time) and jumped aboard a ferry to Sydney. We decided that there was no point in taking a harbour tour, since the Ferry goes past the major attractions.
First stop the Opera House, which is a testament to what you can do with concrete. We booked up to go and see the Sydney Symphony Orchestra the following night.
We then jumped aboard a bus to Bondi, and stopped briefly, before taking the coastal walk. There wasn't really that many people on the beach, but quite a few surfers, so watched them for a while. We made it as far as Bronte Beach, but didn't want to miss the last bus, so headed back for the city.
Next, round to the Sydney Tower. Neither of us were bothered about walking over the edge on a glass floor at a couple of hundred metres, so we settled for a beer and the amazing views by sunset. We then headed to the Aquarium which was fab, we spent most of the time in the Oceanarium, with 3 metre Sharks swimming around us. Managed to get a beer on Darling Harbour which was very nice, and then headed back to Manly.
Following morning, we took a ferry to Darling Harbour, and looked round the Wildlife centre. The Koala's were pretty cute, and we saw plenty of not so cute things (snakes and spiders).
In the evening, we headed to the Opera House for Shostakovich's 8th Symphony. The first half of the concert was a debut of a piece written by an Oz guy for his wife, who was the soloist Viola player. It was truly awful modern crud. The second half was absolutely amazing and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.
Today, we have been to the Royal Botanical Gardens, which are fab. The rose gardens are beautiful. On heading to the Tropical house, we looked up and saw hundreds of Bats hanging down. They were like flying Guinea Pigs.
A brief stop at the Australian Museum, which is a natural history museum and then headed back to Darling Harbour for a beer.
Tomorrow at 12:00, we will be climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Having been over it on the bus today, Graeme is confident, Emily less so! However, seeing as it is $400 to go up for us both, we definately will be making it to the summit.
We will then be heading north to Byron Bay on a glorious 14 hour bus journey.
We'll keep you posted of any exciting events!
Emily & Graeme
