After the buzz of Iguassu, it was time to hit the beach. I took a flight from Iguassu to São Paulo but then drove straight out to the coast to the quaint, cobbled streets of the town of Paraty. This is a beautiful old colonial town with the original cobbled streets and no cars in the old part as well as lots if beautiful beaches. I spent one of the days sailing around the islands, stopping off in a number of small bays and beaches to swim and snorkel. It was also an all day Caipirinha tasting event. Like Dad with wine, I took the cocktail tasting very seriously sampling a variety of flavours including original caipirinha ( ie with lime), passionfruit, strawberry and kiwi. By the end of the day I felt I was rather an expert on this brazilian speciality and the walk off the boat and back to the hotel was somewhat of a haze.
After three nights in Paraty it was time to visit the island of Ilha Grande three hrs from Rio. The island had a lovely laid back feel, no cars and no wifi but plenty of time to relax and soak up the sunshine. On one of the days there was a trip to hike to Lopes Mendes beach, said to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. I foolishly chose the 7km hike rather than the boat and finally arrived at the beach about 3 hrs later , a hot sweaty mess! Fortunately the beach was pretty spectacular ( see photo). I learnt my lesson and was first in line for the boat back. That night and to reward myself for my hiking prowess, it was time for more caipirinhas and a BBQ and a night of dancing.
Next stop Rio!
