I have now made it to Argentina, the final stop on my trip and have "rendez voused" with Miss Must in Buenes Aires. Big hello from both of us to all the Speechly's ladies!
It was so nice to see an old friend and familiar face when walking into the hotel in Buenos Aires and as you can imagine the whole afternoon/evening on night 1was spent gossiping and drinking beer/wine. We stayed in a lovely little boutique hotel in the District of San Telmo, the home of Tango and on day 2, following a leisurely stroll around the centre and a visit to the tomb of Eva Peron in Recoleta, we headed to a fantastic Tango evening where we got to see how the expert argentinian's do it followed by a master class. The professionals were brilliant. Angela and I were slightly less proficient but nevertheless enthusiastic participants in the class. Of the basic 8 steps in tango, I think I can now remember 3 or 4!!
We have since spent 3 days in Patagonia and took a mini hike on the Perito Moreno Glacier. After a delayed start courtesy of Aerolineas Argentina we had a fantastic time. The glacier was truly awesome and the trip included about an hour and a half on the ice in crampons. This is trickier than you might think. I was fine on the uphill part of the hike but rather less confident on the downhill sections so was very pleased to be presented with a glass of Jameson Whiskey (on Moreno Glacier ice....) towards the end of the hike which was all I needed to sail through the rest of the hike without fear! A whiskey has never tasted so good. After the hike we got to view the rest of the glacier and some fantastic calvings where huge chunks of ice break up and fall down into the lake below . We loved Patagonia, definitely a place to return to.
We are now flying to Mendoza, Argentina's wine country where we will have a chance to sample some of the country's best wines. My tour guide, Miss Must has booked us into a boutique hotel with its own vineyard and apparently we have a full day's wine tasting and gourmet lunch booked. Sounds terrible!!
No, something tells me I am going to enjoy the next few days!
