Hi guys, I wasn't going to write on here today but it's been a while and I have had a pretty amazing day. I'm not on here for long so I will have to write a more detailed blog soon.
I didn't go into work today as we had a little something planned for the street kids of Mombasa. We went to see where they lived today, or where they used to live. The bigger street kids built a community of small shelters for the kids to live in but it was burnt down recently so now they are on the streets again. We were warned that this would be a very dangerous place to visit but I couldn't resist and I'm glad I went. There were about 30 children-teenagers crowded around us who were very eager to get the bread and biscuits we had brought them. It was scary, they weren't forceful but obviously very hungry. Every one of them sniffs glue so by the time we left we were all completely light-headed and headachey. Although all of these children are on their own, they have formed a sort of community and there was a definate order between them. One bigger boy took the bread and distribute it once the others had lined up in front of him. They were also very polite. They all said please and thank you and really did appreciate what we gave them. They were quite friendly too-the bigger boys especially but we were very careful not to let that lead anywhere. One girl we met was 22 and very heavily pregnant-about 8 1/2 months but she still walked about a mile with us to find her friend. I have never seen anything like what I saw today, this is the real Africa that we see on TV and doesn't touch us because we can't believe that there are people in the world living like this. I am going to go back with more food. I keep finding causes that I would love to help in the future but this is a big one. These children have no way of finding any decent future without help and all they need is a bit of time and somebody who really wants to make a difference.
I'm glad to see this side of Mombasa as well. The ironic thing is that their shelters were just behind a very expensive hotel and nobody really knows about it so nobody cares. I've always thought of the street kids as pests-my view has definately changed and I'm sure it will back in England too.
I have a lot more to write about what I've been up to this week but I'll have to leave it a little longer as a banana milkshake has my name on it. I'll just let everyone know, we had three new volunteers this week so I'm not on my own at Restoration anymore, there are 3 of us now.
I hope everyone is fine, please keep leaving me messages because I love receiving them and let me know what everyone's up to, I miss home life. love you all and welcome to the new edition to Aimi's family xxxxx
