So, I've been here a week and survived!!! I have had a couple of problems-always being hungry, being ripped off by people who think I don't know what I'm doing (which I don't most of the time) and 'tummy troubles' but I suppose it's all part of the experience. Before I came here I didn't like rice, now I have it every day and I love it!
So, we've had a few problems at the orphanage with corruption and such like-will definately look in to it and see if I can make any changes. And I know how I can do things differently next time. The kids are truly amazing though. They take everything in their stride and love the attention they get from us-and the cameras!!! They love to dance and sing and play games so we are constantly kept entertained and amused-very tiring though!
This weekend, me and the two other girls who are at my project went on safari to Tsavo East national park which was stunning. It's like how you imagine Africa to be-full of animals just roaming about. We saw: elephants, impalas, zebras, giraffe, cheetahs, warthogs, so many other animals and they were all soooo close!! I got some amazing pictures, I never want to forget the experience. We stayed in a lodge which, although simple was luxury to us. A nice shower, a reasonably comfy bed, a balcony and-it was clean. We even got up early enough to watch the sunrise-beautiful.
I'm really not missing England, I'm missing food and my mum and friends but it's so amazing here that you just get blown away and forget about home. Today, after work we went to the Bombalulu market which is a workshop and market run by disabled people. They make everythihng there and all the money goes towards helping the disabled. It was so amazing to see them making all the finely crafted jewellery so I bought some beads and also some seads which I thought would be the perfect reminder of my visit.
Also bought some postcards so you special people should be receiving some soon (providing the postal system here works!)
One very strange thing out here which you really can't help noticing-everyone shouts 'Muzungo' at you which is 'white people' in Swahili, if I shouted 'black people' in Manchester city centre, i'd be shot!!!!! Also, time moves sooo slow in Kenya, you can't be inh a rush for anythihg, you have to take your time and put up with it!!! We're learning quite a bit of Swahili as we go. I've learnt 'head, shoulders, knees and toes' all the way through, also, hi, bye, mother, father, my name is ellie, i come from england, and other exciting things like that. Today I learnt, come here and go away!!
Sorry about the spelling by the way but I'm using a v old keyboard and I can't really be bothered to go back and change everything. I'm sure it can't be that bad though!!!
So the plan for this week is quite full: tomorrow, we are going to a lady called Judy's house-she is the cleaner, maid type person at the orphanage. Wednesday we are going to Diani where there is another school we are taking letters to then we are going clubbing in Bamburi near where we work. Thursday we are going go karting after work but aparently it's labour day so we may not be in work anyway. Then Friday it is one girl's birthday so we are going out for dinner after work then mayb going for ice cream. Were are having a s**thead tournament at the moment and whoever loses by Friday has to buy every1 a scoop of ice cream-I nearly lost last time so I need to practice!!!
Anyway, my tummy is telling my to get off the computer and get some food so I guess I'll be back to talk to you loverly people soon. Hope evryone is keeping well and I'm not missing too much
love you all
