Hello from London!!
After months of planning we're finally here! The plane trip was loooong but not too painful. We ended up sitting next to a lovely girl named Bridie from Melbourne who is spending 9 months backpacking around Europe. We lucked out by not getting someone who was huge and stinky as she was neither of these and actually enjoyable to talk to. We've exchanged numbers and will probably catch up woth her again when we get back London towards the end of our trip.
So after a looong flight and a 50 minute delay in Bangkok airport we finally made it to London at 7am (London time). Caught the underground for the first time. Not too much of a different experience to Sydney trains except when a man got on and started preaching about love between people. This was strange enough but then he proceeded to tap dance! All the local people hardly paid any attention but I struggled not to laugh - he was a very good dancer actually! After the eventful underground trip we walked to our hostel arriving at about 10am, desperate for a shower and some sleep! We had the shower but managed to keep ourselves awake the whole day to help us kick the jetlag.
London is very similar to what I thought it would be (cold) but we've had some surprisingly blue skies and nice days, great for sightseeing and photos! Seen some of the usuals like Big Ben, Westminster, Buckingham Palace and Madame Tussauds but today we're off to Harrods, Tower of London and Hyde Park for the Christmas markets.
Yesterday on our walk through St James' Park from Westminster to Buckingham Palace we met the funniest squirrels ever. I remember squirrels from Central Park in the US but these ones were so human friendly (searching for food) that they came running at us and around us, scaring the crap out of Alex but it was so funny.
We had some very nice room mates for 1 night. They were a couple of Irish girls from Dublin who were in London for the weekend to go shopping. We stayed up chatting to them for a fair while and they've offered to show us around Dublin when we get there next week (yay)
Last night we caught up with Wilson, a friend of mine from Sydney who has recently moved to London for drinks and dinner at the pub up the road. All was relatively normal until we were joined in our booth by an old man wearing a penguin suit and a top hat who was jabbering away about all sorts of things. He claimed he had just got back from Afghanistan, which is where he had lost most of his fingers (he had all fingers) and that he was hungry because he hadn't got his army credit yet so he couldn't buy his food. I thought he was harmless so I just let him be and he continued to tell me that he was a comedy writer and had written all of the Fawlty Towers episodes. At this stage the bar manager came over and asked him that unless he bought a drink he would have to leave. The manager came back a few minutes later and asked him to leave, which he didn't and so he dragged him out. It was the most eventful dinner we've had so far!
Running out of time! Must go and see more sights! I'm going to try and upload some photos now, so I hope it works!!
Lots of love,
Ellie xxxxx
