I am overwhelmingly tired, so I'll keep this one short.
We arrived in Venice last night, after driving all day and having a brief (maybe an hour and a half) stop in Verona so that we could visit Juliet's balcony etc. We went out for a prearranged new year's eve dinner at a local restaurant which ended up being three hours long and not involving any good food... There was polenta slush, chicken broth with pasta in it, mystery meat reast and stale cake with sweetened jam. But if was manageable. Thank god for bread baskets!
Then we went out to a local 'Aussie Bar' which was small and a bit on the seedy side but also friendly, noisy, and fun. Leah, Lexi, Liz and I (they're three girls all traelling together and the youngest, Lexi, is twently five!) all went to get drinks and I didn't know what to get so they decided that it was time for me to try a Jaagerbomb, which is basically a shot of Jaagermeister mixed with Redbull and then skulled. I thin I had five of those over the course of the evening... There were various other drinks throughout the night - midori and lemonade (two of those) and a shot of Baileys, as well as random sips of beer and also some wine that an Italian guy gave up (it was stupid to take it, I know, but we were all fine so no worries). We went to the main square in Mestre at about 11:45pm and danced around wildly taking photos of one another while the locals took photos of US and then when midnight came around we all screamed and whooped a lot and blew party poppers and then went back to the bar where we met a bunch of about six Italian guys and we just sat outside chatting in english AND a bit of italian until 3:30am when we all wobbled back to the hotel (some people had already gone home, but us fun ones stayed out later). When I got into my room (a single which is nice - lots of privacy) I was all ready to go to bed but I was too buzzed so I went on Facebook instead and ended up chatting on there until about 5:30am when I fell asleep. THEN I woke up at 6:15am and couldn't get back to sleep so i got up because I'd set my alarm for 7am anyway, tried to get into the shower but couldn't because all the redbull from the Jaagerbombs had given me massive shakes, finally managed to get out of my pjs, and went and sat on the floor of the shower with the hot water running onto my head for a whole hour until breakfast time! For those people who were present at classics the day after Kiri's party, it was another one of those days.
We caught the bus (the public one, not the Topdeck one) into Venice Venice as opposed to Mestre where we're staying, and spent the day wandering the canals. We did a wee walking tour, a gondola ride which was lovely, and visited a Venetian glassblower's workshop where he showed us how he makes glass horses (see the photos in the Topdeck album). Then nine of us went and had lunch, went to St. Mark's Basilica, and then me and girl called Laura headed back to the hotel because I was about ready to collapse with exhaustion.
So now I'm back in my room. I can't be bothered going out to get dinner so I'm going to pack up my gear and hit the hay. Tomorrow's another early start, because we're headed for Salzburg! I'm so excited - I love Italy to bits but it'll be lovely to see a new country, plus we're watching the Sound of Music on the bus TVs along the way!
Hopefully I can update again either tomorrow or the night after that, by which tim I will have done a FOUR HOUR Sound of Music tour through Salzburg - YAY!
