GREAT NEWS!!! Our luggage FINALLY arrived! The airline lost it for 4 days. It left New York on a different flight than us and appeared to have sat in Johannesburg, South Africa for a few days. It arrived about 4 hours ago—right now it is Thursday night 8/21 at 10:30pm. It is SO nice to have our essentials again! I think the things I missed most were clean clothes and hair detangler plus getting low on my allergy pills was a bit stressful. It turned out Mom had her Malaria pills after all, so we were ok on that front.
Today, we woke up early and had breakfast at the lodge. During breakfast, we saw deer, caribou, various birds, and a couple of buffalo. After breakfast, in our room, we saw a herd of buffalo at the watering hole. We decided to check out downtown today. The hotel bus drops off and picks up from downtown every hour. Upon exciting the bus, we saw a bunch of baboons which were really cool to see! We asked a guy who was hawking Zimbabwe money (which is now worthless) if they would attack. He looked at them and pointed to one saying, "That one would." I got some great pics and video of the adult baboons and cute babies. After taking pictures of the baboons, we started walking towards town (we were dropped off just on the edge). We heard a woman yell and run across the street with a baboon chasing her while two men ran to try to help her. The baboon ran off and the woman was ok. It was an odd sight to see—a woman being chased by a baboon across the street! The baboons just cruise around and go where they want to. The baboons appear fairly intelligent and even the little baby looked across the street both ways for cars before crossing the street.
In town, we looked through some shops which are geared towards both tourists and locals. As we were walking through town (the main drag consists of about two streets) we saw a sign for $1 beer. We couldn't turn that down, so we enjoyed a local beer at a very local bar. We continued through town checking out the shops and then decided to have lunch—fried calamari and empanadas . After lunch we took the shuttle bus back the hotel, rested briefly. In our room we saw six warthogs pass right below our balcony. After resting a bit, we went to the viewing area of the hotel. We were told that between 4 and 6pm many animals come to the watering hole. We saw birds, deer, and a huge herd of buffalo. While we were having dinner in the viewing area, our tour guide informed us that our luggage had arrived! After dinner we went back to the room for showers and to go through out luggage. We are very happy to have our stuff back after spending almost all of the time in Zimbabwe without it!
Tomorrow we fly to Johannesburg!
