Made it to New York! Left Modesto, CA at 3:30am on Saturday 8/16 and drove to Sacramento airport for flight--four hour flight to Midland Airport Chicago on Southwest. We were the last people on the plane for first come first serve airplane seating. We both sat in different rows, in middle seats, sandwiched between two strangers—it was a VERY LONG 4 hours! After arriving in Chicago, we had a 3 ½ hours layover. We happened upon the USO lounge and enjoyed some snacks and TV for almost 2 hours. Luckily for our next flight to La Guardia Airport New York, we were able to both snag isle seats.
After a 2 hours flight we landed in La Guardia. We were going to take a bus to JFK Airport, then take the hotel shuttle, but luckily the bus driver was a nice guy and took us all the way to our hotel. We slept in until 10:00am which is actually only 7:00am CA time. After a quick breakfast and showers, we took numerous trains, trams, taxis, and shuttles to sightsee. We saw a play called Peace of my Heart—the Bert Berns Story, which was excellent. Then we visited the 911 Memorial. The memorial was a great tribute; simple and elegant (see photos). The last time we I was in New York, the area where the Twin Towers stood was fenced off and full of debris left over from the 911 attack.
Tomorrow morning we are off for Africa!
