Welcome to Poland!
A land of delicious food, and fire breathing dragons!
By the time we finally arrived in Poland, I had been talking about perogies for days on end. I had been going through a massive perogy withdrawal, so when we hit the Christmas market, it was my mission to find some. Unfortunately, we had a short time there before dinner, and I only found this squeaky cooked cheesy thing that was absolutely delicious, and came with a cranberry sauce (Arek, can you/your mom make this? For me? I'll love you forever!)
We did a very quick walking tour, and then headed back to our hotel, as it was a little outside the city. Did I say hotel? I use the term loosely. We had "hotel upgrade" while in Poland. Have you ever been to a hotel with bunk beds? Yeah... Me no ether, until Krakow! It wasn't awful, but it certainly wasn't what I expected from a hotel! Our dinner consisted of a soup, and schnitzel with potatoes. Not exactly the traditional polish food I was looking forwards to, but I guess I survived.
After dinner everyone got all ready, and went out for a big night on the town. A little club called Kitsch in Krakow, with awful service, and only one bar, but we certainly had a blast. The quest for food afterwards was a little rough though. Would you believe that both Mackers and KFC were closed?! How dare they! We ended up settling for some mediocre chicken nuggets and fries from the servo down the street. Its a wonder none of us woke up with food poisoning the next day!
After a short amount of sleep, we got up early to go to the salt mines! This was actually really cool! Its a working salt mine to this day, and we saw 20km of it on our tour. That is only 2% of the mine! Tegan and I licked the wall - mmm salty! And then found out that the shinier parts of the walls are where the most people have licked.... Its like we've now kissed a million people. Ick. It was really cool to wander through and see how they've almost made their own little city underground. They have sculpture made of salt stone, a chapel, a massive cathedral, and tunnels for miles. We even saw chandeliers made out of salt crystals! It was very cool.
After the salt mine we went into town for lunch. Saw Krak thee fire breathing dragon, and then I got my much anticipated perogies. Teresa, yours are better! Haha they were still delicious though, and I was a glutton and tried all the flavors. Potato and cheese, potato and cottage cheese, mushroom and spinach, meat, blueberry, and strawberry and cheese. Soo delicious! Also had some more of that cheesy goodness. Mmm. Had some drinking chocolate (literally hot melted chocolate, so thick and rich!) And wandered the Christmas markets. Finished off with a little H&M visit for some new jumpers, because Poland is ridiculously cold. (Have I mentioned how much I hate the cold, and may die upon returning to Canadian cold!??)
Tonight was a pretty chill night, early to bed for almost everyone, as Auschwitz was the next day, and no one was to be hungover for Auschwitz, and rightfully so.
