Hi all from New Mexico,
Before I tell you our latest doings, I forgot to tell you that when we were in the hummingbird aviary the hummers were starting to build their nests so we saw a half-made one ~ they used spider web in it's construction J
On our first night in New Mexico we were staying in Alamagordo and suddenly there was a huge sound, like thunder but louder and close ~ on asking, were told it was a sonic boom! There is an Air Force Base nearby.
We went to the White Sand Dunes National Monument ~ 300 sq miles of white dunes, made of gypsum, quite beautiful. Tess loved it ~ from the top of a dune she would run down a bit then stretch her front legs straight out and toboggan down!! She did it over and over, ending up with her tongue hanging out covered with sand. Very cute.
From there we went to see Roswell, where in 1947 a flying saucer is supposed to have landed, with 4 aliens, one of whom was found alive. The museum sure had enough proof, for us anyway, that something had happened that the US military covered up and didn't want anyone talking about. Whether it was aliens or not, well, it's up to you…..
We are now camped at a state park near Carlsbad and yesterday went to the caverns. We walked down into the caverns ~ a mile long trail that takes you down 730ft below the surface! Then you are in the "big room" ~ how big is it you ask? Well, the trail around part of the room is 1 ¼ miles!! It is apparently 14 football fields long. There are all kinds of amazing formations and we had fun imagining shapes, animals, friends and relatives etc.
Woke up to a skiff of snow this morning!! We are at about 3,500 ft and there has been a cold front over much of the southwest the last couple of days. It is supposed to be colder the next few days so we have changed our mind about going higher and are going a different way ~ will be in Texas on Dec 4th. We are snug and warm in the trailer and had a really nice walk in the sun today around the lake here.
There is something weird happening with our email ~ we can receive but not send. Our provider (Shaw) can't figure it out, the guy thought it was something to do with the provider of the campground we were in but it is still happening so we are thinking of getting a gmail account and see if that helps. Hope to get on internet tomorrow and sort it out (am writing this Dec 3rd and we haven't got internet here). So, to make a long story short, we are NOT ignoring you, just haven't been able to reply to your messages. Please keep writing to us J
Hope all is good with you,
Love, Malcolm and Elinor

Dave Skipp The mail problem must be a Shaw thing we have the same problem when we are in The Kootenays. Did you know that my home town is called Stockton, but it's in North East England. Travel Safely, Betty and Dave.
